LHS athletes shine with records and top finishes in final meet before State

The Lennox High School track and field team delivered a powerhouse performance at the Southeast South Dakota Showcase held in Vermillion on May 22, 2025, racking up numerous top-three finishes, setting new school and meet records, and showing peak form ahead of the upcoming State Track Meet.
Bergan Musser continued her dominance by setting a new school record in the 400 meter dash and bettering her school record in the long rung jump. Musser won the girls’ 100m dash in a time of 11.92 seconds, a new meet record and the second-best time in Class A this season. She followed it up with a runner-up finish in the 400m, clocking 56.96—setting a new school record in the event, and earning another meet record. This time also marks the fastest 400m time in Class A. Musser also bettered her school record in the long jump, winning the event with a leap of 18-05.00, currently the top Class A mark.
Teammate Jayla DeCou sprinted to third in the 100m with a personal-best 12.41, also under the previous meet record, placing her sixth in Class A. DeCou followed with a third-place finish in the 400m (1:00.42).
Addison Martz had a dominate day as well, claiming two individual titles, winning the girls’ discus (129-02) and shot put (39-03.75), both new meet records. Martz is now ranked third in Class A in both events. Martz also placed fourth in the javelin, joined by teammates Ryan Hanssen (5th) and Lilly Meyer (7th).
Eighth grader Tori Gerdes added to the podium finishes with a third-place result in the 100m hurdles (15.97) and a second place finish in the 300m hurdles (47.05).
In distance events for the girls, Adie McVey won the 1600 meter run with a new meet record time of 5:15.49. Kelsey Schmidt set a new meet record with her personal best time of 11:27.41 in the 3200 meter run. This time places her seventh in Class A.
Karlie Bosma set a new meet record in the girls’ 800 meter run with a time of 2:22.06, this mark was also a personal best for Bosma.
On the boys’ side, Drake Mikkelsen captured first place in the 400m dash with a PR of 50.15, now ranked second in Class A. In the 800m, Cade Sherard led a strong distance group by winning in 2:01.98, while Chett Jibben placed third (2:06.61). Sherard doubled back to help the 4x400m relay team to a new meet record time of 3:27.21 alongside Isaak Booker, Noah Sayler, and Mikkelsen.
Teegan Musser sprinted to third in the 200m (23.04) and won the high jump with a clearance of 6-02, setting a meet record in the process. Teammates Layton Smith and Tate Gerdes both cleared 6-00 to go 2-3 in the high jump, with Gerdes later claiming first in the triple jump with a meet record leap of 40-11.25.
One of the most exciting moments of the day came from the boys’ 4x100m relay team, as Ben Dejong, Jaxson Bittner, Boston Katzer, and Teegan Musser teamed up to set a new school record and meet record with a time of 43.94 seconds to win the event.
In boys’ throws, Jevyn Lefers won the shot put with a mark of 48-11.75, and Nate Haar placed fifth in the discus with a PR of 138-04. Haar set a new meet record in the discus with a throw of 138-04.
Brennan Juffer won the boys’ javelin with a toss of 150-06, the 10th-best mark in Class A, bettering his school record.
Noah Sayler took second in the boys’ 1600 meter, finishing with a season best time of 4:40.35. Jibben took third with a PR of 4:44.10. Maverick Horst took eighth (5:00.66).
The 2025 State Track and Field Meet will be held May 29–31 at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls. Action begins at 10 a.m. on Thursday, and 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
