The Lennox High School boy’s tennis team traveled to Pierre on May 2 to take on Huron and then St. Thomas More. First off, the team competed against Huron. The match started with doubles competition where all three flights were won by the Tigers.
In singles, the Orioles had some competitive matches but could only come away with one win from Pierce Temme at flight #4, so the Tigers took the win 8-1.
Next up the Orioles took on St. Thomas More. Again, the dual started with doublers where they had three close and competitive matches. The duos of Cody and Eli Plank at flight #1 and Gunnar Geiken and Pierce Temme at flight #2 scored wins 10-7 and 10-4 respectively.
In singles the matches and momentum kept going back and forth and were very competitive, but in the end, singles wins were scored by Cody Plank at flight #1, Eli Plank at flight #3 and Pierce Temme at flight #4 to give the Orioles the 5-4 win over the Cavaliers.
On Friday and Saturday, the Orioles participated in the Pierre invite. There were eight schools competing where each flight in singles and doubles are seeded into bracket play.
The day started strong in doubles with the duos of Plank and Plank winning the flight #1 championship 6-4, 6-3 over the top-rated team in Class A, Welch and Temme earned the sixth place spot at flight #2 and the duo of Welch and Heibult earned a third place finish at flight #3.
In singles, C. Plank earned a second-place finish at flight #1, Geiken received third place at flight #2, E. Plank received sixth place at flight #3 , Temme received 5th place at flight #4, Welch received a second place finish at flight #5 and Heibult received a fifth place finish at flight #6.
“The competitive fight and positive results of the whole team helped them secure the third place position as a team at the invite,” said Oriole head coach Kevin Plank.
The team competed in the DAK XII invite on May 6th in Sioux Falls and went to Madison on May 7th to take on the Bulldogs in their last regular season match of the year, watch next week’s paper for results.
