On Friday, May 28 and Saturday, May 29, hundreds of athletes headed west to compete in the 2021 State A Track and Field Meet.
Among those athletes were several from Lennox High School who had earned the right to compete among the top in the State.
Alicia Ruud enjoyed a successful season and her success didn’t stop at State. Ruud placed third in the Class A 800 meter run with a time of 2:23.76 in the event. Winning the State title was Mt. Vernon Plankinton’s Berkeley Engelland with a time of 2:21.41 in the event. Emily Plucker also competed in the event for the Orioles, taking 10th with a time of 2:26.47.
Ruud was also a member of the 4x800 meter relay that medaled at State after finishing seventh with a time of 10:15.03. Team members included Ruud, Plucker, Kelsey Schmidt, and Kaylee Hofer. Winning the title was the team from Mt. Vernon Plankinton who finished the race in a time of 9:39.52.
Ruud also ran the 400 meter dash at State, just missing the podium, finishing in tenth place with a time of 1:01.58. MVP’s Engelland won the State title in a time of 58.27.
Caleb Sayler also had a strong season which continued into State. Sayler, a senior, competed in the 1600 meter run and clocked a personal best time of 4:34.86, earning sixth place at State. His time narrowly missed placing him among a strong Lennox Top 10 All-Time list. Winning the State title was Isaac Davelaar from Sioux Falls Christian, finishing with a time of 4:22.05. Sayler also competed in the 800 meter run, earning 11th with a time of 2:04.62. Davelaar won the State title in the event with a time of 1:58.05.
Sayler was also a member of the 4x800 meter relay team which medaled at State, earning eighth with a time of 8:37.20. Team members included Sayler, Jaren Hartman, Tarles Antoine, and Cloy McVey. Winning the title was Sioux Falls Christian who crossed the finish line in a time of 8:12.83.
Another strong performance at State for the Orioles came at the hands of Zach Zirpel, Braeden Wulf, Cohen Metcalf, and Steven Christion. The four combined in the 4x200 meter relay and captured fourth place with a personal record of 1:32.40. That time for the LHS boys put them at second all time in school history. Winning the title was the team from Sioux Falls Christian with a new meet record — a time of 1:29.14.
The boys’ 4x100 of Kuper, Zirpel, Wulf, and Metcalf clocked a 45.43 at State to earn seventh place honors in the event. Winning the event was a team from Sioux Falls Christian, crossing the finish line in 43.12.
Christion ran a personal record of 22.87 in the boys’ 200 meter dash, to earn him a spot on the podium, taking eighth place in the event at State and placing sixth all time in Lennox history. Winning the state title was Sioux Falls Christian’s Chris Oostra with a time of 22.12.
Kuper also reached the podium for the Orioles individually, earning eighth place in the 110 meter hurdle finals. He finished with a time of 16.07 seconds. Winning the event was Mitchell Walker of Sioux Falls Christian who clocked a 14.51. Austin Strasser finished the year at 15th in Class A with a time of 17.0 at the State Meet.
