Orioles hold first home football game of the season

After two early scores by Brookings, the Lennox High School football team fell behind early and were unable to regroup, dropping the game to Brookings 37-0.

The Orioles were unable to stop the running game of the Bobcats as they finished with 396 rushing yards in the game on 44 attempts. All five of Brookings touchdowns came off the run. They also had a field goal in the fourth quarter. They finished the night with 408 yards of offense.

Lennox ended the night with 238 yards, gaining 116 on the ground and 122 in the air.

Despite the loss, head coach Matt Luze was proud of his team.

“I’m very proud of the fight and grit this team showed after we got behind. They never gave up on one another,” said Luze. “I have to do a better job preparing us during the week for what we will see.”

In the air, Brandon Fodness completed 12 of 23 pass attempts for 122 yards. He also rushed for 43 yards on the night on ten carries. Jackson Arlt rushed for 20 yards on five carries.

Top receiver on the night was also Arlt who grabbed five passes for 47 yards. Ayden Speilman had two receptions for 28 yards.

Defensively, Jase Langbehn led the team with eight tackles on the night. He also recorded a quarterback sack. Arlt had five tackles along with Peyton Eich who also finished with five. Fodness recorded an interception in the game and Arlt was credited with a fumble recovery.

The Orioles will host Custer this Friday, Sept. 11.

“Custer will be coming onto our field with a chip on their shoulder and we have to be ready for them,” said Luze.

Custer lost to West Central, 42-19 in their season opener but defeated Spearfish 40-0 last Friday.

Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
