A come from behind win last Friday night, gave the Lennox High School Oriole football team the 21-20- season opening victory over West Central.
Lennox found themselves down 0-14 after an interception gave the Trojans a two score lead. Lennox managed to chip away at the lead, scoring seven points of their own after a long catch and run by Steven Christion. Ethan Eli kicked through the extra point, leaving the score 14-7 at the half.
Neither team found the endzone in the third quarter. In the fourth with just over six minutes to go in the game, West Central ran it in from nine yards out. The extra point was no good but the Trojans had a 20-7 lead.
Lennox fought back, never giving up. In a fantastic drive, Braeden Wulf found Jackson Arlt for a 19 yard touchdown and the extra point by Eli gave Lennox a fighting chance, leaving the score 14-20 with 2:29 left in the game.
With two minutes left in the game, the Orioles defense held West Central to 4th and 5 forcing them to punt. Lennox got the ball on the 18 yard line and quickly converted a first down. With 39 seconds left in the game, Wulf found Christion for a 48 yard touchdown and Eli’s point after put the Orioles up 21-20.
Time was on the Orioles’ side and as the final seconds ticked off, Lennox celebrated the 21-20 victory.
“The boys showed a lot of grit and effort tonight. We continued to fight as a team and put ourselves in a position to win the game,” said LHS head coach Matt Luze. “We have many things to improve on but if we continue to put this much effort and focus into our practices and games, I’m excited to see what this team can accomplish.”
The Orioles finished with 329 yards of offense, gaining 75 yards on the ground and 254 yards in the air.
Wulf completed 13 of 35 passes for 254 yards. He had three touchdown passes and three interceptions on the night.
Christion caught six passes for 168 yards, including two touchdown grabs. Arlt grabbed five passes for 58 yards, including a touchdown pass. Carter VanHouten had four receptions for 42 yards in the game.
On the ground, Arlt rushed for 32 yards on 12 carries and Wulf recorded 33 yards rushing on 13 carries.
Defensively, Ayden Spielman led the way with eight tackles and recovered a fumble in the game. Jase Langbehn had seven tackles and Gabe Beman had six. Arlt had an interception and Cody Peterson had one forced fumble. Jase Langbehn and Denver Lefers each had a quarterback sack in the game.
Lennox will host Custer on Friday, Sept. 3. Custer, who has a very young team this year, lost to Madison 42-0 in their season opener. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. The LHS band is scheduled to perform at halftime.
