LHS girls fall to Vermillion, earn comeback win over Deubrook Area

On Thursday, Jan. 13 the Lennox High School girls basketball team hosted Vermillion and were unable to get things going. The Orioles shot just over 32 percent in the game while Vermillion shot nearly 56 percent, earning them the 53-34 victory over Lennox.

“We didn’t come ready to play versus Vermillion. They were able to jump on us right away from the tip and we never recovered. We had way too many turnovers and too many defensive breakdowns early in the game,” said LHS head coach Adam Quail. “Giving up 53 points on our homecourt isn’t what we want to be known for. We need to come ready to play this week as we have three challenging games!”

For Lennox, Ryan Hanssen led the way with 13 points, hitting two three pointers in the game. She also pulled down seven rebounds, had one assist and one steal.

Alicia Ruud finished with 12 points, five rebounds, one assist and led the team in steals with three. Andie Peters ended the night with three points, one rebound, one steal and led the team in assists with five. Gavyn Herlyn finished with three points, one rebound, one assist and one steal and Drew Kuyper also had three points. She pulled down one rebound in the game.

On Saturday, Jan. 15 the LHS girls traveled to Mitchell to compete in the Hanson Classic.

After a rough start against Deubrook Area, the Orioles found their groove and started fighting back to get the exciting 44-43 victory.

“We looked nervous at the start of our Deubrook game. We weren’t patient on offense and took way too many shots from the perimeter early in the possession. Defensively we were solid which kept us within striking distance,” said Quail. “In the second half we found our rhythm offensively and gained some confidence once we saw some shots go in. I was really impressed with how we kept our heads and kept chipping away at Deubrook’s lead. We moved the ball well and trusted our teammates to make the right play. Exciting game and proud of our team!”

For Lennox, Hanssen had 13 points, hitting six of 11 from the field. She also grabbed four rebounds, had one assist and two steals. Peters also finished the night in double figures, finishing with 11 points. She pulled down one rebound and had four assists. Kuyper finished with nine points and led the team in rebounds with nine in the game. Courtney Sandal and Ashlee Sweeter each had four points and Herlyn finished with three. Sandal grabbed six rebounds and had two assists. Sweeter had two rebounds, two assists and one steal. Herlyn had three rebounds, four assists and Ruud pulled down five rebounds and had one steal in the game.

Lennox was scheduled to take on Parker on Tuesday, Jan. 18 and will take on West Central on Thursday, Jan. 20 in Hartford. This is a double header match-up with the LHS boys. On Friday, Jan. 21 the LHS girls will host Platte-Geddes, in another double header with the LHS boys. The varsity girls are scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m
