LHS athletes find early success on the track


Lennox hosted their first track and field meet of the 2020-2021 season on Thursday, April 15.

Teams from Tea Area, West Central, Canton, Garretson, Madison and Vermillion all competed against host Lennox.

The Orioles found several successes with the girls’ 4x800 meter relay team getting things started on the track. The team, consisting of Emily Plucker, Alicia Ruud, Lily Mechels, and Kelsie Schmidt, finished in a time of 10:14.81 to capture first place honors, finishing over 30 seconds ahead of the second place team from Tea Area.

The LHS boys’ 4x800 meter relay team also found success, earning second place in the event with a time of 8:58.91. Team members included Caleb Sayler, Cloy McVey, Tarles Antoine, and Jaren Hartman.

Lennox’s Steven Christion had a strong day at the Lennox meet, finishing first in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash and the long jump. Christion clocked a time of 11.72 in the 100 meter dash to win the event. In the 200 meter dash, he clocked a 23.55 to earn first place honors and in the long jump, he jumped a distance of 19’11.25” to win the event.

Other first place finishers for Lennox included Ruud who took top individual honors in the 800 meter run. Ruud clocked a time of 2:22.29 in the event.

Ruud was also a member of the 4x400 meter relay team that took top honors with a time of 4:21.24. Running with Ruud were team members Esther Christion, Dani Highum, and Emily Plucker.

There were several other top ten performances from Oriole athletes on the day.

In the boys 110 meter hurdles, Layne Kuper took second place honors with a time of 17.42 seconds in the event. Landon Slack finished with a time of 18.88 to take third, Austin Strasser a time of 18.92 to take fourth and Jacob DeJong a time of 21.42 to take tenth. In the boys’ 300 meter hurdles, Kuper finished second with a time of 42.64 in the event. Strasser took fourth (46.89); Slack sixth (47.41); and DeJong ninth (49.47).

For the girls, Destiny Hofer took ninth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 21.31 seconds.

In the girls’ 100 meter dash, E. Christion took fourth with a time of 13.76 in the event. In the boys’ 100 meter dash, S. Christion wasn’t the only Oriole to find success. Zach Zirpel took sixth place honors with a time of 12.22 seconds.

The boys’ 4x200 meter relay team of Carter Van Houten, Jackson Arlt, Cohen Metcalf, and Ethan Larson finished fifth with a time of 1:42.11.

In the girls’ 1600 meter run, E. Plucker took third place with a time of 5:44.74 for the Orioles. In the boys’ 1600 meter run, McVey finished sixth with a time of 5:08.88. Isaac Bambas took tenth in the event with a time of 5:14.05.

The girls’ 4x100 meter relay team of Highum, Christion, D. Hofer, and Kendra Nielson, took fourth place with a time of 54.56.

The boys’ 4x100 meter relay team of Christion, Van Houten, Metcalf, and Braeden Wulf took fifth place with a time of 47.19.

The boys’ 400 meter dash saw Zirpel taking ninth with a time of 56.91.

In sprint medley relay action, the LHS girls’ team of Madison Johnson, Kaylee Hofer, Schmidt, and Josephine Plucker, took sixth place with a time of 5:10.56. The LHS boys’ team of Carter Benning, Ethan Eli, Trey Gerdes, and McVey, finished in third place in the event with a time of 4:05.22.

In the boys’ 800 meter run, Sayler took third in the event with a time of 2:05.63. Hartman took seventh in the event (2:15.68).

In the girls’ 200 meter dash, Nielson finished third for Lennox with a time of 28.83 seconds. For the boys’, Christion took first and Zirpel finished in the top ten, placing eighth with a time of 24.61 seconds.

In the girls’ 3200 meter run, Schmidt took second with a time of 12:25.32. For the boys, Bambas took fifth in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:08.52.

In the boys’ 4x400 meter relay, the Lennox team of Sayler, Van Houten, Metcalf and Kuper took sixth place with a time of 3:53.33.

In field events, Lennox’s Highum took fourth in the high jump, clearing 4’6”. Johnson took fifth in the event, clearing 4’6”.

In the boys’ high jump, Gerdes and Gabriel tied for fourth, clearing 5’4”.

With Christion winning the boys’ long jump, Lennox’s Wulf earned second place with a jump of 19’8.25”. Zirpel took sixth in the event, jumping 18’5.25”.

In the boys’ shot put, Cody Peterson threw a distance of 43’7.5” to take third in the event. Jacob Stubbe took fourth in the event, throwing a distance of 42’7”. Mason Temme finished eighth with a throw of 36’2.5”.

In the girls’ discus, Mara Hinker threw a distance of 82’4” to take eighth in the event.

In the boys’ discus, Temme took third with a throw of 118’7”. Blake Gibney threw a distance of 103’10” to take sixth and Stubbe threw a distance of 101’6” to take seventh. Gabe Beman finished tenth with a throw of 92’4”.

Prior to the Meet at Lennox, the LHS track and field team competed in the Canton Relays on Tuesday, April 13.

Ruud claimed first place honors for the LHS girls in the 1600 meter run, clocking a time of 5:23.40 in the event. Sayler took second for the boys in the event, clocking a time of 4:44.66.

Ruud also captured first place honors in the 400 meter dash, clocking a time of 1:01.53 in the event. E. Plucker placed third for Lennox (1:05.12).

The boys’ 1600 sprint medley relay team of Christion, Van Houten, Zirpel, and Sayler took first place honors with a time of 3:55.63 in the event.

The LHS track and field team is scheduled to host another track meet on Thursday, April 22. Events are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
