Boys claim Region title, girls earn runner-up honors


Winning the Region 3A Cross Country title last Thursday, Oct. 14 was the Lennox High School boys’ varsity team. A second place finish by Sam Swanson propelled the team to the Region title, edging out Vermillion for the Region championship.

Swanson took second at Regions with a time of 16:24.93 just four seconds off of the first place runner, Beresford’s Andrew Atwood.

Lennox also had strong performances from Cloy McVey who finished in the top ten, taking ninth place with a time of 17:35.09. Maverick Horst captured 13th place with a time of 17:48 and Noah Sayler also finished in the top 20, taking 17th with a time of 17:58.26. Isaac Bambas finished in 23rd for Lennox, clocking a time of 18:18.10. Landon Atkins took 34th with a time of 19:17.67.

The strong performance by the LHS varsity boys qualified the entire team for the State A Meet which will be held this Saturday, Oct. 23 at Yankton Trail Park, Sioux Falls.

Also qualifying the entire team for State were the LHS girls who claimed second at Regions. The team was led by Alicia Ruud who finished third at Regions, clocking a time of 19:38.60. Kelsey Schmidt finished in the top ten, taking seventh place with a time of 19:53.68. Emily Plucker captured 11th place with a time of 20:32.91; Josephine Plucker took 28th with a time of 21:58.55; Karlie Bosma took 30th with a time of 22:04.67; and Graycee Postma took 44th at 22:57.34.

Lennox took second at Regions, finishing behind Ethan/Parkston who won the Region title.

The 2021 State A Cross Country Meet will be held at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls. The girls’ Class A race begins at 12:30 p.m. and the boys’ Class A at 2 p.m. Competitors are to be in position to line up for the race at least ten minutes prior to the scheduled race start time.

Awards will be given out following the Class AA boys race at 2:30 p.m. Medals will be awarded to the top 25 individual runners in each class. Medals will also be given to individual members of the top six teams. Trophies will be given to the State Championship team and runner-up teams. Plaques will be rewarded to third, fourth, fifth and sixth place teams.

Also competing at Regions for Lennox were the Junior Varsity teams.
