Wiebers honored with Hometown Hero Award: Longtime voice of Oriole athletics recognized for dedication to Lennox schools and community

A familiar voice at Lennox High School athletic events received a special recognition Friday, Oct. 9, as Orville Wiebers was presented with the 2026 Modern Woodmen of America Hometown Hero Award prior to the Orioles’ home football game against Dakota Valley.

Lennox School District Activities Director Casey Shade made the presentation, inviting Wiebers to step away from his usual spot in the announcer’s box and join him on the football field to be recognized for his years of service to the school district and community.

The Modern Woodmen of America Hometown Hero Award recognizes individuals or groups who have made important contributions to their communities, demonstrated exceptional bravery or gone above and beyond to positively impact the lives of others. Recipients do not have to be Modern Woodmen members, and many are individuals who quietly make a difference without seeking recognition.

For Wiebers, that dedication has been evident both on and off the athletic field.

For years, Wiebers has been a familiar voice at Lennox home games, bringing excitement and energy to countless athletic events. However, his contributions extend well beyond the microphone. He also generously gives his time as a crossing guard at the district’s intermediate and elementary schools, helping students, parents, teachers and others safely make their way to and from school.

During the presentation, Shade recognized Wiebers for his willingness to continually show up, lend a helping hand and give his time with a smile and positive attitude. His dedication reflects the qualities that make a small community special — people who care enough to get involved and make a difference simply because they want to help.

While his service may not always make headlines, his kindness, generosity and willingness to help have not gone unnoticed by those throughout the Lennox community.

As part of the recognition, Wiebers was presented with a Hometown Hero plaque and a customized letter jacket, serving as a special symbol of the many ways he has supported the community. He will also have the opportunity to select a charity of his choice to receive a $100 donation in his honor through Modern Woodmen of America.

The presentation concluded with appreciation for Wiebers’ years of cheering on Lennox students, supporting local schools, helping families and being someone the community can count on.
