Verlyn Hofer honored at 2021 Memorial Day Program



On Monday, May 31 the Lennox American Legion held their Memorial Day program featuring performances by the Lennox Municipal Band, awards presentation to area students, and special recognition to World War II Veteran, Verlyn Hofer.

Hofer was presented with a certificate from the National Legion and a special pin recognizing his 75 year membership in the American Legion by John Kirchner. Hofer is the last WWII veteran in Post 174 Brethorst Burma.

The night also saw the Scholarship and Citizenship awards presentation. Due to COVID-19, the 2020 Memorial Day program was not held, so on Monday night the 2019-2020 award winners were honored along with the 2020-2021 winners.

Those being recognized included the following students:

2019-2020 Lennox American Legion Award Winners — 8th: Scholarship – Kathryn Loewe, Clara Stucky, Trey Gerdes; Citizenship – Lydia Richter, Michael Hall; 9th: Scholarship – Aliyah Bainbridge, Hailey Johnke, Courtney Sandal, Jaiden Stien, Kaleb VanRuler; Citizenship – Emily Plucker, Landon Slack; 10th: Scholarship – Kaylee Bosma, Tanner Miller; Citizenship – Alicia Ruud, Zander Gilland

2020-2021 Lennox American Legion Award Winners — 8th: Scholarship – Kelsey Schmidt, Noah Buhta; Citizenship – Kendra Gilbert, Jack Aasheim; 9th: Scholarship – Lydia Richter, Trey Gerdes; Citizenship – Dani Highum, Elijah Homan; 10th: Scholarship – Hailey Johnke, Landon Slack; Citizenship – Cailey Highum, Zacharia Rezac

The program also featured Zacharia Rezac leading the Pledge of Allegiance, Hailey Johnke and Cailey Highum reciting ‘In Flanders Field’ and Landon Slack sharing Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

The Lennox Municipal Band kicked off their season with their first performance of the summer. The band is under the direction of Byron Youngquist.
