After receiving significant rain prior to the Region 2A Girls’ Golf Meet, water hazards multiplied at Bakker Crossing and became a challenge numerous golfers would have to overcome as they fought for their right to compete in the State Tournament.
The wet conditions, however, did not stop Lennox High School’s Ashlee Sweeter who was able to punch her ticket to State at the Region Meet held Tuesday, May 31 at Bakker Crossing.
It was announced before the event that carts would not be allowed due to that saturated course conditions. However, the course was still playable so competition went on as scheduled.
Lennox’s Sweeter shot a 96 on the day to finish 14th, qualifying her for the 2022 State A Tournament. Sweeter’s day was highlighted by a birdie and four pars. She shot a 50 on the front nine and a 46 on the back to clinch a spot at State.
Missing the chance to compete at State were LHS golfers Gracie Dose, Jazlyn Gayle, Courtney Sandal, and Madison Stengrim. Dose shot a 113 on the day, shooting a 59 on the front nine and a 54 on the back. Gayle shot a 116 on the day, finishing with a 55 on the front nine and a 61 on the back. Sandal shot a 118 at Regions, shooting a 56 on the front nine and a 62 on the back. Stengrim shot a 129 at Regions with a 69 on the front nine and a 60 on the back nine.
Winning the Region 2A individual title was Sioux Falls Christian’s Sydney Tims. The team title was won by Sioux Falls Christian. Vermillion took second as a team and Canton third, to all qualify for State.
The 2022 State A Girls Golf Tournament began on Monday, June 6 and wrapped up on Tuesday, June 7 also at Bakker Crossing. The tournament was a two-day, 36 hole event. Each contestant played 18 holes on both days. Deadlines prohibit the printing of results in this week’s paper, but watch next week’s paper for complete results from the State Girls Golf Tournament.
