Schmidt speaks at Memorial Day Service

The annual Memorial Day Service for Lennox American Legion Brethorst-Burma Post No. 174 was held Monday, May 27. This year’s speaker was Command Sgt. Maj. Robert, Bob, Schmidt. Schmidt started his service right after graduating from Parkston High School in 1997. He spent four years active duty for the Marines. He took a break after the Marines and then joined the South Dakota Army National Guard in 2006.

When he was in the Marines, he had a deployment in Okinawa and South Korea. Since he’s been in the Army Guard, he was deployed to Afghanistan in 2010-11 and Africa in 2020-21.

Schmidt is married to Patty and the couple have two daughters, Kelsey and Kamille. 

The Lennox Municipal Band also performed for the  first time of the season at the program. The band is once again be under the direction of Byron Youngquist.

Several Lennox High School students were honored with Lennox American Legion Awards for Scholarship and Citizenship. Those earning the honor included the following students: 

8th Grade, 2023-2024: Scholarship—Olivia Homan and Grant Buhta; Citizenship—Grayden Veurink

Freshmen, 2023-2024: Scholarship—Karlie Bosma, Kenzie Bosma, and Noah Sitter; Citizenship—Haven Larson

Sophomore, 2023-2024: Scholarship—Hadley Johnson, Josephine Plucker, Eli Highum,and Cloy McVey; Citizenship—Aleeah Oltmanns

Hadley Johnson helped lead the Pledge of Allegiance. In Flanders Field & Response was read by Josephine Plucker and Eli Highum and the Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was recited by Cloy McVey.
