Orioles find success at Rich Luther Relays

Lennox High School track and field athletes put on a strong showing at the annual Rich Luther Relays on Tuesday, May 6, capturing numerous top-three finishes and personal records across the board.

Teegan Musser led the way for the boys’ team with a first-place finish in the high jump at 6-04.00, a mark that ranks fourth in Class A this season. Musser also won the long jump (21-05.50, 5th in Class A) and took second in the 200m dash (23.17), followed closely by teammate Drake Mikkelsen in third (23.60) and Ben Dejong fourth (24.42). Mikkelsen also placed 10th in the 100m dash (11.68).

The 100m dash was dominated by Jaxson Bittner, who raced to a first-place finish with a personal record of 11.24 seconds, ranking 10th in Class A. Bittner also took second in the long jump with a leap of 20-08.50.

In hurdles, Wyatt Bult took third in the 110m (16.73) and placed fourth in the 300m hurdles (45.14), while Joey Boysen (46.05) and Kedren Fergen (49.60) followed in fifth and 14th, respectively. Fergen also tied for fifth in the pole vault (9-09.00).

Isaak Booker secured a win in the 400m dash, finishing in 54.37, and Cloy McVey and Cade Sherard dominated the 800m run, placing first (1:59.93) and second (2:00.74), respectively. In the 1600m, Noah Sayler (4:44.01) edged teammate Chett Jibben (4:44.72) for first with Jibben taking second. Landon Strasser placed second in the 3200m with a time of 11:03.07.

On the girls’ side, eighth grader Tori Gerdes stood out with two runner-up finishes—26.66 in the 200m (8th in Class A) and 1:00.31 in the 400m (6th in Class A). In the same 400m race, Josephine Plucker (1:04.70), Sophia Johnson (1:05.19), and Kelsey Schmidt (1:06.01) followed closely behind.

In distance events, Adie McVey ran a 2:19.84 in the 800m to take second overall (5th in Class A), and Karlie Bosma added a fourth-place finish (2:22.56). Lucy Carlson placed fourth in the 1600m (6:05.16) and third in the 3200m (13:34.87).

Addison Martz was a double-medalist in the field events, winning the girls’ discus (117-08) and the girls’ shot put (37-03). She also placed second in the javelin (102-09). On the boys’ side, Brennan Juffer threw a personal best of 147-04 to take third in the javelin, while Jevyn Lefers placed third in the shot put with a throw of 50-02.50 (4th in Class A).

In jumps, Bergan Musser (8th grade) soared to first in the long jump with a leap of 17-01.50, followed by Holly Gillick in second (15-11.50). Gillick also placed fifth in the high jump (4-08.00).

In the boys’ triple jump, Tate Gerdes took third with a season’s best jump of 40-10.25. 

Relays were also a bright spot for the Orioles as the 4x100 meter team of Ryan Hanssen, Bergan Musser, Holly Gillick and Jayla DeCou finished with a time of 51.07 to win the event and set a new meet record in the process. 

The girls’ 4x400 meter relay team of Jayla DeCou, Bergan Musser, Karlie Bosma, and Adie McVey ran a season’s best 4:03.03 to win the event and move to No. 2 in Class A. 

The boys’ 4x400 meter relay team of Noah Sayler, Cade Sherard, Drake Mikkelsen, and Cloy McVey captured first place honors with a time of 3:28.39. 

The boys’ 1600 Sprint Medley relay team of Jaxson Bittner, Boston Katzer, Aiden Hanssen, and Isaac Booker took second place with a time of 4:05.18 in the event.
