Orioles fall to West Central, 24-12

The Lennox High School football team fell to West Central, 24-12, Friday, Oct. 2.

West Central took an early lead in the first quarter when the Trojans scored on a 4-yard run, giving them a 7-0 advantage.

The Trojans extended their lead in the second quarter with a 26-yard touchdown pass, making it 14-0 at halftime.

West Central added a 30-yard field goal in the third quarter to push its lead to 17-0 before Lennox got on the scoreboard. Levi Simonsen scored on a  two yard run, although the Orioles were unable to convert the two-point attempt, making the score 17-6 heading into the fourth quarter.

West Central added another touchdown early in the fourth quarter on a 21-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 24-6.

Lennox answered when Cayden Huls connected with Brennen Juffer on an 18 yard touchdown pass. The Orioles again attempted a two-point conversion but were unsuccessful, leaving the final score at 24-12.

Lennox finished with 291 total yards on 67 plays, compared to 246 yards on 66 plays for West Central. The Orioles recorded 190 passing yards and 101 rushing yards, while West Central finished with 189 passing yards and 57 rushing yards.

Huls completed 17 of 29 passes for 190 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. He also led the Orioles in rushing with 55 yards on 14 carries. Shayden Olean added 37 rushing yards on 12 carries.

Drake Mikkelsen had a big night receiving, catching 10 passes for 152 yards. Juffer added one reception for 18 yards and a touchdown, while Bennett Hanssen had four catches for seven yards and Maxon Flanagan had one reception.

Lennox recorded 14 first downs compared to 16 for West Central. The Orioles converted 3 of 12 third-down attempts and 1 of 4 fourth-down attempts.

Defensively, Nolyn Spielman and Jevyn Lefers each recorded five tackles. George Scott added four tackles. 

Lennox committed three turnovers, all interceptions, while West Central had two turnovers from fumbles.

The Orioles will take on the 2-4 Dakota Valley Panthers at home this Friday, Oct. 9. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. This will be the final home game of the season.
