On Friday, Sept. 8 the Lennox High School Orioles battled it out against Canton in the annual Black and Blue Bowl, ultimately dropping the match-up 20-28.
Canton struck first on a one yard run, but their two-point conversion attempt failed, giving them a 6-0 lead.
Lennox answered back scoring on a two yard run of their own by Triston Butler, aided by a long kick-off return by Ethan Larson. The Orioles’ two-point conversion attempt also failed, tying the game at 6 each. Lennox scored again as Boston Katzer connected with Drake Mikkelsen for a 47 yard touchdown pass. Mikkelsen then ran in the two-point conversion, to give Lennox the 14-6 advantage.
Before the end of the opening quarter, Canton managed another score and had a successful two-point conversion run to tie things up at 14 apiece.
In the second quarter, Canton managed to score on a 16 yard pass but once again their two-point conversion attempt failed, giving them only a six point lead. Lennox was unable to find the endzone before the half, trailing Canton 20-14.
In the second half, Canton scored the only touchdown of the third quarter on a four yard run. The two point conversion brought Canton’s lead to 28-14.
In the fourth, Lennox managed another score as Katzer connected with Mikkelsen for a nine yard pass. The point after was no good, leaving Lennox trailing 28-20.
The Orioles attempted one more drive in the final minutes but an interception sealed the win for Canton, who moved to 3-0 on the season. This marked Lennox’s first loss of the season, dropping them to 2-1.
Lennox finished the night with 225 yards off offensive, gaining 185 in the air and 40 on the ground. Canton finished with 317, using mostly a rushing attack with 274 yards rushing.
For the Orioles, Katzer completed 17 of 33 passes for 185 yards. Ihnen grabbed four passes for 85 yards and Mikkelsen grabbed four passes for 71 yards. Chase Faulds had three grabs on the night with 21 yards.
On the ground, Corbin Hanneman rushed for 15 yards on six carries. Katzer rushed for ten yards on four attempts.
Defensively, Tate Gerdes led the team in tackles with ten on the night. Larson finished with seven tackles and had an interception. Lucas Bontje had seven tackles, Talen Eich four, Carter Benning three, Emory Lefers three, Hanneman two, and Journey Noisy Hawk-Ellis one.
Canton will host Custer this Friday, Sept. 15 in the 2023 Homecoming match-up. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. Custer has yet to win a game this season, opening with losses to West Central (50-13), Tri-Valley (45-7) and Rapid City Christian (14-12). A tailgate supper will be held at the football field prior to kick-off, beginning at 4:30 p.m. The LHS Marching Band will perform at halftime.
