Orioles enter post-season with 15-5 record

On Monday, Feb. 12 the Lennox High School girls’ basketball team hosted Vermillion and found themselves behind early and unable to come back, losing 51-40 to the Tanagers.

“It was a challenging game for us as it was our fourth game in six days,” said LHS head coach Adam Quail. “We competed well in the first half but let the game slip away in the third quarter. We really struggled shooting from the perimeter and for us to beat good teams we will need to shoot better than 2-18. Because of our perimeter shooting woes, Vermillion was able to pack the lane which really made scoring difficult.”

For the Orioles, Carli Kuper finished the night with a double double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Teagen Sturm had eight points, two rebounds and four assists. Dani Highum finished with ten points, five rebounds, and two assists. Ryan Hanssen had six points, four rebounds, and one assist. Andie Peters had three points and two assists and Karlie Bosma finished with two points and two rebounds.

On Tuesday, Feb. 13 the Orioles hosted Beresford in their final regular season game.

Lennox jumped out to an early lead and pulled away for the 56-39 victory on senior night.

“Our Beresford game was senior night which is always a fun opportunity to honor our seniors who have given so much time and energy to the basketball program,” said Quail. “This year we have three seniors, Ashlee Sweeter, Carli Kuyper and Dani Highum. It has been fun watching how much these three have grown both on and off the court. As seniors, they have really focused on their leadership and being positive teammates. I thought we played well vs Beresford as we controlled the game from the tip and had contributions from a number of players.”

Kuyper finished with 13 points and had six rebounds. She also had two assists and one steal. Hanssen scored 11 points. Sturm scored eight points, grabbed two rebounds, had one assist and one steal. Bosma also scored eight points, grabbed three rebounds and had three steals. Peters scored six points, had four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Highum finished with five points, seven rebounds, a team-high five assists and two steals. Gavyn Herlyn and Olivia Niederbaumer each had two points in the game. Sweeter finished with one.

Lennox was scheduled to face off against Dakota Valley on Tuesday, Feb. 20 in the first round of Region playoffs. The winner will advance to the second round on Thursday, Feb. 22 with the winner of that match-up qualifying for the SoDak 16.
