The Lennox High School football team secured their second straight win of the season with a commanding 52-0 victory over Custer in the home opener on Friday night, September 6. The Orioles showcased a powerful offense and a suffocating defense, setting the tone early and never letting up.
The scoring started with a 35-yard touchdown run by Tate Gerdes, followed by a successful two-point conversion pass from Boston Katzer to Drake Mikkelsen, putting Lennox up 8-0. Gerdes added a 37-yard touchdown reception from Katzer, extending the lead to 14-0, though the two-point conversion attempt failed. Layton Smith caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Katzer, with Jevyn Lefers running in the two-point conversion, giving Lennox a commanding 22-0 lead. Chase Faulds capped off the first-quarter scoring with a 24-yard touchdown reception from Katzer. Katzer added the two-point conversion on a run, making it 30-0.
Lennox continued to dominate in the second quarter, with Ramsey Williams hauling in a 15-yard touchdown pass from Katzer and running in the two-point conversion, bringing the score to 38-0. Maxwell Weeldreyer then added a five-yard touchdown catch from Katzer, with Gerdes connecting on the two-point conversion pass from Katzer for a 46-0 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, the Orioles put the game to bed with Gerdes catching his second touchdown pass of the night, a 28-yard strike from Katzer, to round out the final score at 52-0. The extra point attempt was no good.
Quarterback Katzer completed 17 of 28 passes for 290 yards and six touchdowns, with just one interception. His longest pass of the night was a 37-yard touchdown to Gerdes.
Gerdes contributed significantly, rushing for 92 yards on seven carries and scoring a rushing touchdown in addition to his three receptions for 69 yards and two touchdown catches. Williams rushed for 52 yards on six carries and Corbin Hanneman rushed for 13 yards on three carries. Smith grabbed five receptions for 63 yards. Teegan Musser had two for 53 yards, Mikkelsen three for 47 yards, Faulds one for 24, Williams one for 15, Lefers one for 14 and Weeldreyer one for five.
Lennox’s offense tallied an impressive 447 total yards—290 through the air and 157 on the ground. Meanwhile, Custer was limited to just 58 total yards, all of which came through the air.
Key defensive players included Williams, who recorded four tackles, and Nathan Haar, who added three tackles for a loss. Lefers also had three tackles on the night.
The Orioles will face a tougher challenge this Friday, September 13, as they host Sioux Falls Christian, who holds a 2-0 record after defeating Rapid City Christian (41-22) and West Central (42-13). Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. The LHS Marching Band is scheduled to perform at halftime.
