Oriole boys get trio of wins

It was a busy week for the Lennox High School boys’ basketball team as they took on Mount Vernon Plankinton, Rock Valley, and Pine Ridge.

Three games equaled three wins for the Orioles.

Lennox defeated Mount Vernon/Plankinton (MVP) 60-46 on Jan. 4 and defeated Rock Valley, IA 61-51 on Jan. 6.

Against MVP, three Orioles were in double figures. Jaxon Plank led the team in scoring with 18 points, hitting four of six from three point land. Plank pulled down two rebounds, had two assists and three steals. Porter Ihnen had 13 points in the game. He grabbed four rebounds, led the team in assists with six and had three steals. Jackson Arlt finished with 11 points, two rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Also scoring for the Orioles were Conner Eich who finished with seven points. He also had four rebounds, two assists and one assist. Carter Van Houten finished with six points, Braxton Musser had three points, two rebounds and Steven Christion had two points, four rebounds, one assist and three steals.

“I’m proud of our guys for finding ways to win. Both MVP and Rock Valley came into our games with only one loss,” said LHS head coach Chris Buckmiller. “It’s great that we have been challenged early on in the season. We’ve had multiple guys step up and help our team. I believe it’s difficult for teams to prepare for a team with so many players who can step up.”

Against Rock Valley, Arlt led the team in scoring with 22 points. Arlt hit four of eight from downtown and finished with one rebound, five assists and three steals.

Van Houten finished with 15 points, going five of six from three point land. He also had one assist and two steals. Eich finished with nine points, one rebound, two assists and two steals. Talan Diercks had six points, one rebound, and one assist. Christion finished with two points, two rebounds and Plank added two points, pulled down three rebounds, had two assists and one steal.

On Saturday, Jan. 8 the LHS boys traveled to Mitchell to compete in the Sacred Hoops Classic.

Lennox took on a 1-6 Pine Ridge team and started out strong and never looked back, getting the 95-33 victory.

Ihnen had an exceptional game scoring 45 points.

“We don’t talk about individual stats often, but it’s worth noting that we believe Porter Ihnen broke the single game record for scoring. On Saturday, he scored 45 points, 41 of those points came in the first half. It’s a great accomplishment for a young man who plays unselfish and puts in a ton of work to be a great basketball player. The best part, was seeing how happy his teammates were for him. It showed how highly they think of Porter,” said Buckmiller.

When attempting to verify the record, Athletic director Dan DeVries said they couldn’t say for sure it was a record, but he showed in 1982 Daryl Fincher scored 43 points for the Orioles.

In the game against Pine Ridge nine Orioles scored in the game. Eich finished with 11 points, Braeden Wulf scored eight, Andrew Daugherty eight, Musser six, Arlt six, Trey Gerdes and Benning four each, Diercks two, and Christion one. Leading the team in rebounds was Ihnen who pulled down 20 in the game. Daugherty had six and Gerdes five. Wulf, Christion and Ihnen each had four assists and Ihnen finished with four steals.

The Orioles will host Vermillion on Friday, Jan. 14 in double header action with the LHS girls. The varsity boys are scheduled to tip-off at 8 p.m. On Tuesday, Jan. 18 Lennox will host Chamberlain with game time set for 7:45 p.m.
