The Lennox High School softball team endured a challenging stretch of games last week, falling in three close match-ups.
Beresford 4, Lennox 2
Lennox opened the week on Tuesday, April 28, with a 4-2 loss to Beresford. After a scoreless first inning, the Orioles struck first in the second when Madyson Dykstra delivered an RBI double to score Macy Wallenstein for a 1-0 lead.
Both teams remained locked in a tight battle until the sixth inning, when Beresford tied the game at 1-1 on an RBI single. In the seventh, Beresford launched a three-run home run to give them a 4-1 advantage.
Lennox attempted a late rally in the bottom of the seventh. Layci Eli drove in a run with a single, cutting the deficit to 4-2, but the Orioles were unable to complete the comeback.
Eli pitched all seven innings, allowing eight hits and recording seven strike-outs.
Vermillion 10, Lennox 9
On Thursday, April 30, Lennox came up just short in a high-scoring 10-9 loss to Vermillion. The Orioles started strong, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning behind an RBI double from Macy Wallenstein and a run-scoring groundout by Teagen Sturm.
Vermillion responded with a big second inning, scoring six runs to take control and eventually building a 10-2 lead. Despite the deficit, Lennox mounted an impressive comeback effort.
Jersey Zahn highlighted the offense with a home run in the third inning, and the Orioles steadily chipped away at the lead. By the seventh inning, Lennox had pulled within one run. RBI hits from Hayley Hahn and key situational hitting helped bring the score to 10-9, but the rally fell just short as the final out ended the game.
In the pitching circle for the Orioles were Hahn and Eli. Hahn pitched one inning and Eli pitched five, recording six strike-outs.
Tri-Valley 14, Lennox 2
Lennox closed the week on Friday, May 1, with a 14-2 loss to Tri-Valley. The Mustangs used a series of extra-base hits to build an early lead, scoring three runs in the second inning and seven more in the third to take a commanding 10-0 advantage.
Tri-Valley continued to add runs in the fifth inning, including a two-run home run, to extend the lead to 14-0. Lennox broke through in the bottom half of the inning, as Layci Eli and Macy Wallenstein each drove in runs to account for the Orioles’ scoring.
Eli pitched the entire five innings, recording six strikeouts.
The team will host Dell Rapids on Thursday, May 7 and will be at Dakota Valley on Tuesday, May 12.
