Last week the Lennox High School girls’ basketball team wrapped up their regular season with wins over Beresford and Tri-Valley, claiming the DAK XII Conference title in the process.
On Feb. 17 the Orioles took on Beresford and outscored the Watchdogs 18-4 in the second quarter and 21-7 in the third to get the 57-27 victory.
“I was very excited about how we competed in the final two games of the regular season. Against Beresford, I thought we did an excellent job sharing the basketball, finishing with 20 assists as a team,” said LHS head coach Adam Quail. “It’s always special to play well on Senior Night, and I’m glad we were able to honor our terrific senior class on a high note. Mia Hanisch, Andie Peters, and Izzy Vargas have meant so much to our program over the past four years. They are really excelling this season in their leadership roles and have done a great job keeping everyone focused and on the same page.”
Peters led the team in scoring, finishing the night with 18 points. She hit five three pointers in the game. She also grabbed one rebound, had one assist and one steal. Fellow seniors, Hanisch had two points, one rebound, and one steal and Vargas grabbed three rebounds and had one assist.
Bergan Musser was in double figures for the Orioles finishing with 12 points. She also grabbed three rebounds, had one assist and one steal. Teagen Sturm scored seven points, grabbed one rebound, had three assists and led the team in steals with four. Both Adie McVey and Karlie Bosma finished with five points, Tori Gerdes had four, and Jayla DeCou and Olivia Niederbaumer each had two. McVey and Gerdes led the team in rebounds with six each in the game. Bosma led in assists with seven.
On Thursday, Feb. 19 the Orioles hosted Tri-Valley and held the Mustangs to just 22 points in their 66-22 victory.
“The Tri-Valley game was especially exciting because a win meant we would claim the DAK XII Conference title outright, which is extremely difficult to accomplish,” said Quail. “I think that opportunity added an extra sense of urgency for our team, and we responded by controlling the game from start to finish. It was great to see eleven different players score, and just like in the Beresford game, we played very unselfishly, finishing with 22 assists.”
Both Peters and Niederbaumer were in double figures with Peters scoring 15, going five of nine from three point range and Niederbaumer finishing with 13, going six of eight from the field. Peters had two steals in the game and Niederbaumer had four rebounds.
Musser finished with nine points, three rebounds and one steal. McVey had seven points, two rebounds, five assists and one steal. Gerdes and Sturm each had five points. Sturm led the team in rebounds with seven and in assists with seven. Gerdes had six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Vargas and Kenzie Bosma finished the night with three points each and Libby Kranz, Hanisch, and Karlie Bosma each had two points.
The Orioles will host the winner of the Canton/Beresford match-up which was scheduled to be played Feb. 24 on Thursday, Feb. 26 in a 7 p.m. Region 4A playoff game. The winner of that game will qualify for the SoDak 16. Lennox finished the regular season with a 17-3 record to earn the top seed in the Region. SoDak 16 games will be played Thursday, Mar. 5.
