LHS girls tack on more wins

On Tuesday, Jan. 16 the Lennox High School girls’ basketball team traveled to Parker and dominated the Pheasants, winning 78-23.

Lennox jumped out to an early 21-4 lead and never looked back, shooting over 55 percent from the field.

“I was really impressed with how we moved the ball and involved everyone offensively,” said LHS head coach Adam Quail. “Gavyn Herlyn with six assists and Teagen Sturm with five assists were both impressive running the show and distributing to teammates. With how little we had been able to practice due to weather it was reassuring to see how well we shot as we finished shooting 12/24 from three.”

Hot from the three point line was Andie Peters who went five of seven from downtown. She finished with 15 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Carli Kuyper led the team in scoring with 18 points on the night. She also had five rebounds and two assists. Ryan Hanssen and Sturm each finished with nine points. Hanssen pulled down two rebounds, had two assists and two steals. Sturm went two of three from the three-point line. Dani Highum finished with eight points, three rebounds, two assists and a team-high three steals. Ashlee Sweeter also finished with eight points in the game, hitting two of her three three-point attempts. Karlie Bosma and Herlyn both finished with five points and Olivia Niederbaumer had two points in the game.

Coach Quail was also impressed with the team’s defensive performance.

“Defensively we were sound and were able to force 22 turnovers while holding Parker to 23.3% shooting,” added Quail.

After the big win over Parker, the Orioles traveled to West Central and despite a slow start managed to secure the 46-25 victory.

“Against West Central we started slow falling behind 3-13, but with the help of our senior leaders we were able to keep our composure and battle back to cut the deficit to four by the end of the first quarter,” said Quail. “We were able to take control in the second quarter behind Kuyper’s 23 points and 10 rebounds as well as Highum’s eight points, seven rebounds, and eight assists.”

Peters added nine points for the Orioles and provided four assists. Bosma finished with three points, Hanssen provided two points and Sweeter one.

Defensively the Orioles held West Central to 18 percent shooting on the night.

The Orioles took on Platte-Geddes at home on Monday, Jan. 22 and pulled out the 56-30 win. Peters led the way with 12 points. Sturm had eight points and Hanssen finished seven points.

The team was scheduled to take on Sisseton on Tuesday, Jan. 23 and will host Parkston on Thursday, Jan. 25. Tip-off time is set for 6:30 p.m. On Tuesday, Jan. 30 Lennox will be on the road taking on Elk Point Jefferson.
