LHS girls’ golf team get season underway

The Lennox High School girls’ golf season got underway on Friday, Apr. 5. The team is once again under the direction of head coach Angela Zirpel who begins her 12th season with the program.

Despite losing Courtney Sandal to graduation, Zirpel is looking forward to see continued success from returning golfers, Ashlee Sweeter, Jazlyn Gayle, Katelyn Vargas, Izzy Vargas, and Catie Sherard.

“We have five returning golfers, four of those players were at a varsity level and competed at Regions,” said Zirpel. “That experience will help us be confident this year.”

Returning golfer, Sweeter, represented LHS at the State Meet last year in Rapid City.

With the DakXII always full of strong competitors, Zirpel expects that to remain the same this season.

“We are fortunate to play with some of the best golfers in our State,” said Zirpel. “That pushes us to be our best.”

The team will also feature newcomers Peyton Herlyn, Kari Gitchell, Alaina Klenner, and Madelyn Lund.

“I am optimistic about our season,” said Zirpel. “We have strong returning golfers and some new golfers that are very athletic and will quickly pick up on competitive golf.”

The LHS team got their golf season underway on Friday, Apr. 5 when they hosted Sioux Falls Christian, Dell Rapids, and Flandreau at Lenkota.

Leading Lennox was Sweeter who shot a 47 on the day, placing fifth overall. Gayle shot a 53 for the Orioles, K. Vargas a 59 and I. Vargas a 61. Herlyn and Sherard also competed for the LHS varsity team. Junior varsity competing on Friday included Gitchel, Lund, and Klenner.

On Tuesday, Apr. 9 the team was scheduled to competed at the Bridges and on Thursday, Apr. 11 the team will face off against Sioux Falls Christian at Spring Creek.

The team will be home again on Tuesday, Apr. 16 and will be at Elk Point for an Invitational on Thursday, Apr. 18.
