By Anne Homan

On Thursday, Jan. 21 the Lennox High School girls’ basketball team hosted West Central. The Trojans came into the game having only lost one contest this season, falling to White River on Jan. 2.

The game was slow going with West Central leading 9-4 after the opening quarter. The Orioles trailed 25-13 at the half but West Central took over in the third, leading 48-17 heading into the fourth quarter. Lennox dropped the match-up 58-29.

“I thought we executed our game plan very well versus West Central for most of the first half. We were able to get stops and good looks on offense. Early in the second half we had a stretch of turnovers and bad defensive possessions which allowed West Central to stretch out their lead,” said LHS head coach Adam Quail. “It was a good experience for our girls to compete against one of the top teams in the state.”

Lennox was led by Mara Hinker who finished with ten points in the game. She had three rebounds, one assist and one steal in the game.

Teagan Sanculi and Jenaka DeCou each had six points in the game. Sanculi grabbed three rebounds and led the team in assists with three. DeCou had two rebounds and two assists. Zoey Zebell finished with five points in the game. She had two rebounds, one assist and one steal. Drew Kuyper finished with two points, five rebounds. Alicia Ruud grabbed five rebounds in the game. Dani Highum and Courtney Sandal each grabbed two boards.

Following their game against West Central, the LHS girls traveled to Platte on Friday, Jan. 22. Things were close at the half, with Platte only leading by 4 points, 19-15, but the lead grew in the third and Platte went on to take the 47-41 win.

Hinker led the way for the Orioles with 17 points. DeCou and Ruud each finished with nine points in the game and Kuyper had seven.

The LHS girls faced off against Vermillion on Monday Jan. 25 in a rescheduled game from Jan. 14, falling 50-46.

The team will host Elk Point Jefferson on Feb. 2 in a double header with the LHS boys and will host Baltic on Feb. 4.
