With a strong group of returners, renewed depth, and a fast-paced identity on both ends of the court, the Lennox High School girls’ basketball team enters the 2025 season with confidence and high expectations.
Head coach Adam Quail, now in his ninth year at the helm, says this year’s roster brings a blend of experience, athleticism, and coach-ability that makes the Orioles a promising contender.
Quail, whose coaching résumé includes time with Sioux Valley, South Dakota State University, and successful stints with both the boys’ and girls’ programs at Sioux Falls Roosevelt, holds a 127–53 record at Lennox. His teams have previously earned a third-place finish in 2018 and qualified for the 2019 state tournament before its cancellation due to COVID-19. He is assisted this season by Paul McVey and Kray Person.
The Orioles finished 14–8 last winter, highlighted by a postseason win over Elk Point-Jefferson and victories over St. Thomas More in the Hanson Classic and Clark-Willow Lake in the DAK XII/NEC Clash.
Lennox did graduate Gavyn Herlyn and Ryan Hanssen, but returns much of last season’s production. Starters Andie Peters,
Karlie Bosma, and Libby Kranz are back, along with key reserves Bergan Musser, Tori Gerdes, and Mia Hanisch.
The Orioles also welcome back Teagen Sturm, Olivia Niederbaumer, and Kenzie Bosma after they each missed last season due to injuries.
Quail said their return adds valuable depth and versatility. He also looks for Adie McVey, Jayla DeCou, Peyton Herlyn, and Izzy Vargas to contribute after putting in a lot of work in the offseason
“These girls understand our standards and play with effort and togetherness,” Quail said. “They’re truly enjoyable to coach.”
Quail points to several key advantages heading into the season, including senior leadership, depth and athleticism, and coach-ability and attitude.
Andie Peters, Mia Hanisch, and Izzy Vargas help bring the senior leadership to the floor and the team’s depth and athleticism is something Quail is excited about.
“We have many girls who can step in and give us quality minutes at any given time,” said Quail. “Our team consists of many multisport athletes which helps with the teams overall athleticism and competitiveness.”
Despite a talented roster, Quail said the Orioles must continue developing in two major areas: interior size and strength and rebounding.
“We need to establish an interior presence on the defensive end,” Quail said. “To reach our goals we need to become a great offensive and defensive rebounding team.”
With Sioux Falls Christian and West Central projected as the top conference challengers, the road won’t be easy. Still, Quail believes the Orioles have what it takes to compete at a high level.
“I’m very excited for this basketball season as we return much of our talent from the previous season. We should be able to play fast on both ends of the court as we have the depth to push the tempo,” said Quail. “Offensively, we have the personnel to score from all three levels, with multiple athletes capable of making shots when needed. Defensively, we are long, fast, and work well together— traits that should give our opponents plenty of challenges. As long as we take care of the ball on offense and play with a chip on our should defensively, I’m confident we’ll have a fun and successful season.”
This year’s roster includes:
Seniors: Andie Peters, Mia Hanisch, Izzy Vargas
Juniors: Karlie Bosma, Kenzie Bosma, Peyton Herlyn, Olivia Niederbaumer, Mya Elliott
Sophomores: Teagen Sturm, Libby Kranz, Jayla DeCou, Catie Sherard, Jersie Hostetler
Freshmen: Adie McVey, Bergan Musser, Tori Gerdes, Allison Loewe, Zada Storm, Lauren Anacker, Morgan De-Haan, Stella Meyer
The 2025 season will kick off on Tuesday, Dec. 9 when the Orioles travel to Dakota Valley to take on the Panthers in the first game of the season.
Fans looking to catch a glimpse prior to the season opener can do so this Saturday, Dec. 6.
The Lennox girls’ and boys’ basketball programs are inviting the community to attend an open practice this Saturday, Dec. 6, from 8:00–10:00 a.m. The boys will practice in the high school gym, while the girls take the court in the new auxiliary gym. A goodwill offering is encouraged, with proceeds supporting both programs.
