LHS boys open season with back-to-back team titles

The Lennox High School Track and Field competed in the Vermillion Booster Club Invite this past Thursday, Apr. 6. The Orioles saw several impressive performances including Lennox High School's Layne Kuper, who took first place in both the boys’ 110 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles.

Kuper finished the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.64 seconds, beating out his teammate Austin Strasser, who finished in second place with a time of 16.13 seconds. Also competing for Lennox in the event were Landon Slack (10th, 18.37), and Joey Boysen (11th, 18.45).

In the 300 meter hurdles, Kuper captured first place with a time of 41.92. Strasser was once again right behind, taking second with a time of 42.19. Slack claimed fourth with a time of 44.73 and Boysen took seventh, clocking a time of 46.46.

The boys hurdle events were just one of several events at the meet, which featured several schools from the area, including Vermillion, Tea Area, Dakota Valley, Beresford, Elk Point Jefferson, Canton, Hinton, West Central, Milbank, Madison, South Sioux City, Milbank, and Gayville-Volin.

Despite the tough competition, Lennox managed to put up a strong showing throughout the day with several notable performances helping the LHS boys claim the team title.

Another first-place performance came at the hands of Drake Mikkelsen who claimed first place in the 400 meter dash, clocking a time of 55.38. Tarles Antoine took sixth in the event (56.71). Karson Iken (1:10.55) and Jacob Lineman (1:10.71) also competed.

The boys’ 1600 sprint medley relay team of Cohen Metcalf, Corban Hanneman, Ethan Larson, and Mikkelsen took first place at Vermillion, clocking a time of 3:56.06 in the event.

In the boys’ discus, Lennox’s Cody Peterson claimed the top spot, throwing a distance of 140’5” in the event. Emery Lefers (92’10”), Austin Richter (73’10”), and Clayton Barrett (71’4”) also competed.

In the boys’ shot put, Peterson claimed second with a throw of 44’9.5” in the event. Tommy Cvitan (34’10”), Lefers (34’4”), and Richter (33’2”) also competed.

Slack earned runner-up honors in the boys’ javelin throw, throwing 132’8” in the event. Lefers (115’8”), Cvitan (113’), and Hannemam (88’1”) also competed in the event.

Cloy McVey took second in the boys’ 1600 meter run with a time of 4:39.24 in the event. Noah Sayler finished eighth, clocking a time of 4:50.29. McVey also took third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:06.58. Chett Jibben finished sixth in the event with a time of 2:11.65. Riley Nelson (3:06.69) also competed.

The LHS boys finished with 119 team points to win the Title over West Central who finished with 99 points in second place. Vermillion took third with 68, Madison fourth with 64, and Tea Area rounded out the top five with 54 team points.

Other top eight finishes for the LHS boys included the boys’ 4x800 meter relay team of Jibben, Cade Sherard, Hayden Hostetler, and Coyer Fergen who placed sixth in the event with a time of 9:13.84.

The boys’ 4x200 meter relay team of Braeden Wulf, Metcalf, Larson, and Trey Gerdes took third, clocking a time of 1:36.57 in the event.

The boys’ 4x100 meter relay team of Wulf, Ashton Bach, Gerdes, and Hanneman took sixth in the event with a time of 47.79.

Sayler took sixth in the 3200 meter run (10:50.74) and Sherard finished eighth in the event (10:57.92). Fergen (11:59.78) also competed.

In the high jump, Tate Gerdes took fifth, clearing 5’8”. Gerdes took eighth in the long jump, jumping 18’3. Keegan Musser finished fifth in the event for Lennox with a jump of 18’9.5”. Wulf (18’3”) and Layton Smith (14’4”) also competed.

In the triple jump, Musser took fifth with a jump of 36’6”.

For the LHS girls, the team finished ninth with Dakota Valley winning the team title.

Highlights for Lennox included a second-place finish for Emily Plucker in the girls’ 400 meter dash. Plucker ran the event in a time of 1:03.83. Plucker also earned a second place finish in the girls’ 800 meter run, clocking a time of 2:29.29. Kenzie Bosma (2:38.79) and Josie Plucker (2:45.58) also compete in the event.

Kelsey Schmidt took fourth for the Orioles in the girls’ 3200 meter run, clocking a time of 12:25.31.

In the girls’ 300 meter hurdles, Karlie Bosma took fourth with a time of 54.12. Hannah Adney (1:00.73) also competed in the event.

Other top eight performances for the girls included the 4x800 meter relay. Lennox team finished in fourth place, with Schmidt, Karlie Bosma, Kenzie Bosma, and Josie Plucker combining for a time of 10:34.08.

The girls’ 4x400 meter relay team of E. Plucker, Karlie Bosma, Kenzie Bosma, and J. Plucker took fifth in the event with a time of 4:28.75.

In the girls’ discus throw, Lennox’s Addison Martz finished fifth with a throw of 100’. Lily Meyer (66’2”), Natalie Andernacht (58’7”), and Miah Hanisch (57’2”) also competed in the event.

Prior to the meet in Vermillion, the LHS track and field team competed in the EPJ Husky Invitational at Elk Point on Apr. 3. The LHS boys claimed the team title with a commanding 159 team points, bettering West Sioux Hawarden who finished second with 100 points. Vermillion took third, Dakota Valley fourth, Colman-Egan fifth, Elk Point Jefferson sixth, Beresford seventh, Homer eighth, Alcester-Hudson ninth, and Centerville tenth.

Highlights for the boys included dominating performances by Kuper and Strasser in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles. Kuper claimed first in both events with a time of 16.32 in the 110 meter hurdles and 43.29 in the 300 meter hurdles. Strasser took second in both with a time of 16.80 in the 110 and a time of 44.22 in the 300. Boysen took fifth in the 110 (19.14) and Slack took sixth in the 300 (46.45).

The boys’ 4x800 meter relay team of Jibben, McVey, Sayler, and Mikkelsen captured first place honors with a time of 8:34.44 in the event.

McVey earned top honors in the 400 meter run, clocking a time f 55.59. Trey Gerdes took sixth (58.13). McVey earned runner-up honors in the 3200 meter run (10:37). Sherard finished fifth for the Orioles (11:29).

Smith won the high jump, clearing 6’. Tate Gerdes took second, clearing 5’8” and Metcalf claimed fifth, clearing 5’8”.

Peterson won the shot put, throwing a distance of 43’9” in the event. Lefers claimed sixth with a throw of 36’8.75”. Peterson also won the discus throw with a throw of 131’7” in the event.

Slack claimed second in the javelin throw with a throw of 137’10”. Kuper took eighth in the event, throwing 111’7”.

Other top eight finishes for the boys included Musser in the 100 meter dash. Musser took fifth with a time of 12.12. Hanneman took eighth (12.42).

In the 800 meter run, Antoine took fourth (2:12.32) and Hayden Hostetler finished seventh (2:21.10). In the 1600 meter run, Sayler took third (5:00.09), Sherard fourth (5:04.88) and Fergen eighth (5:35.40).

The 4x100 meter relay day of Wulf, Bach, Trey Gerdes, and Maxwell Weeldreyer took fifth with a time of 49.91 in the event. The 4x200 meter relay team of Wulf, Metcalf, Larson, and Trey Gerdes took fourth with a time of 1:39.80.

In the boys’ long jump, Wulf jumped a distance of 18’8.25 to take sixth. In the triple jump, Tate Gerdes took second, jumping 37’9”. Musser took sixth (36’.5”) and Smith eighth (34’11.5”).

The LHS girls took seventh as a team. Colman-Egan won the team title.

Highlights for the Lennox girls’ included a third place finish by E. Plucker in the 400 meter run. Plucker finished with a time of 1:05.60. Karlie Bosma was right behind, earning fourth with a time of 1:05.78. Kenzie Bosma took eighth (1:09) in the event.

The Lennox girls’ 1600 meter sprint medley relay team of Ryan Hanssen, Dummer, E. Plucker, and Karlie Bosma captured runner-up honors with a time of 4:52.26 in the event.

In the 800 meter run, Schmidt finished fourth with a time of 2:39.91. Bosma took sixth (2:44.77). Schmidt claimed third in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:48.15. J. Plucker took seventh (6:28.39).

In the 4x100 meter relay, Lennox’s team of Allison Dummer, Adelynn Timmermans, Andie Peters, and Briana Slack took sixth place with a time of 57.96 in the event. The Lennox 4x200 meter relay team of Holly Golllick, Peters, Timmermans, and Slack took seventh (2:05.07). The 4x800 meter relay team of E. Plucker, J. Plucker, Kenzie Bosma, and Schmidt took fourth with a time of 10:28.88.

In the girls’ shot put, Martz took seventh throwing a distance of 29’.75” in the event. Martz earned runner-up honors in the discus throw, with a throw of 95’2” in the event.

In the javelin throw, Meyer took eighth with a throw of 78’8”.

The LHS track and field team was scheduled to compete in Tea on Tuesday, Apr. 11 and will host their first track meet of the season on Thursday, Apr. 13. Field events are set to begin at 4 p.m. with the running events slated for 4:30 p.m.
