On Tuesday, Jan. 7 the Lennox High School boy’s basketball team traveled to Platte Geddes and won, 72-42.

“Platte Geddes is a well-coached team who has been a good program for a long time. It was good for the boys to go and show what they were capable of against a program like that,” said LHS head coach Jacob Hinker. “I was happy with the effort and selflessness of the boys during this game.”

Against Platte Geddes, several Lennox athletes managed to score with Aiden Hanssen leading the way with 20 points. Hanssen went four of six from three point land. He also had three rebounds, and one assist in the game. Drake Mikkelsen finished with 12 points after going six of six from the field. He also had three rebounds, three assists and one steal. Teegan Musser finished with nine points, eight rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Tate Gerdes had seven points, five rebounds, led the team in assists with eight and had two steals in the game.

Talen Eich provided six points, two rebounds and one assists. Boston Katzer, Cade Sherard, Cole Spieler, and Jevyn Lefers each scored four points. Katzer also had nine rebounds and four assists.

Layton Smith finished the game with two points, two rebounds.

Following the win over Platte Geddes, the Orioles took to the road again, facing off against Groton Area on Saturday, Jan. 11.

Lennox trailed early but bounced back to tie things up at the half. The Orioles managed to pull away in the fourth to take the 63-55 win.

“Groton has been a state tournament team 2 out of the last 3 years and they returned starters from last year’s state tournament team,” said Hinker. “We knew going up there that we were going to be in for a battle and that’s exactly what it was. We fought through some sloppiness throughout the game to get a hard fought win.”

Against Groton, Gerdes led the way with 28 points, hitting five of nine three point attempts. He also had five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Katzer was also in double figures, recording a double-double as he scored 15 points and pulled down ten rebounds. He had five assists and five steals to lead the team.

Smith finished with eight points, grabbed four rebounds, and had one steal.

Mikkelsen and Musser each contributed six points. Mikkelsen also pulled down five rebounds, had one assist and one steal. Musser grabbed five boards as well.

The Orioles were scheduled to host Western Christian on Tuesday, Jan. 14 in double header action. They will travel to Vermillion on Thursday, Jan. 16, in double header action with the LHS girls. The boys are scheduled to tip-off at 8 p.m.
