LHS boys and girls’ cross country teams qualify for State

With the threat of unfavorable weather last week, the Region 3A Cross Country Meet was moved to Wednesday, Oct. 11 in Canton. As athletes vied for a spot at the State Meet, the Lennox High School runners delivered standout performances, securing their positions among the top finishers. When it was all said and done, both the LHS girls and boys team punched their tickets to the State A Meet to be held in Sioux Falls this Saturday, Oct. 21.

In the Boys 5k Varsity run, it was Dakota Valley’s Joe Cross who claimed the top spot, crossing the finish line in an impressive time of 16 minutes and 31.72 seconds. However, the Orioles put on a show of their own with Maverick Horst securing the third position with a time of 17:18.49 seconds. Cade Sherard and Noah Sayler finished in the seventh and eighth positions, respectively, showcasing the team’s strength and determination. Sherard clocked a time of 17:43.61 and Sayler a time of 17:44.22.

Cloy McVey earned 12th place for the Orioles with a time of 18:02.98. Chett Jibben took 19th with a time of 18:35.10 and Lucas Hartman finished in 24th place with a time of 10:01.14. With the strong performances, the Orioles earned runner-up honors, giving the entire boys team the opportunity to compete at the State Meet.

The top 20 runners from the meet earned the coveted opportunity to advance to the State Meet, and the top three teams. In the team standings, Dakota Valley emerged as the regional champions and the Orioles took runner-up honors, securing their place at the State Meet. Vermillion took the third position.

In the girls 5k Varsity run, Sophia Redler of Dakota Valley secured first place with a time of 20:09 seconds.

Adie McVey led the Orioles with a third position, clocking a time of 20:14.14.

Others finishing strong for the Lennox varsity girls, were Regan Van Meeteren who took 13th with a time of 21:43.11, Kelsey Schmidt who finished in 18th with a time of 21:50.99, Josephine Plucker who took 20th with a time of 21:58.96, Karlie Bosma who took 21st (22:24.23), and Kamille Schmidt who took 26th (22:44.09).

In the team standings, Vermillion emerged as the regional champions, Dakota Valley secured the second position and Lennox claimed the third spot with a total time of 1:25:47.20, allowing the entire team to compete at State.

The State Meet will be held at Huron this Saturday, Oct. 21 beginning at 12 noon with the Class AA boys, followed by the Class B boys at 12:30 p.m., the Class A boys at 1 p.m., the Class AA girls at 1:30 p.m., the Class B girls at 2 p.m. and the Class A girls at 2:30 p.m.

Awards will be given following the conclusion of the final race. Medals will be awarded to the top 25 individual runners in each class. Medals will be awarded to individual members of the top six teams in each class. Trophies are awarded to the champion and runner-up teams and plaques are given to third, fourth, fifth, and sixth place teams.

Also held at Regions were boys’ and girls’ 4K Junior Varsity races.

For the JV boys, Lennox won the team title with five runners finishing in the top six.

Landon Strasser earned second place (15:00.33), Noah Wood third place (15:17.50), Andrew Stensaas fourth place (15:23.96), Izaak Booker fifth place (15:45.59), and Isaiah Sayler sixth palce 15:47.68.

Also competing strong for the JV boys were Landon Atkins - 16:10.70 (16th), Noah Werner - 16:10.72 (17th), Connor Sherard - 16:15.86 (18th), Leo Aesoph - 16:17.80 (19th), Jackson Schmidt - 16:41.62 (25th), Charley Bittner - 16:57.33 (28th), Cade Aasheim - 17:34.62 (44th), Riley Nelson - 17:58.53 (53rd), Duncan Johnson - 18:23.98 (62nd), Jack Aasheim - 18:40.38 (67th), Caleb Ellwein - 18:46.83 (70th), Jan Montero - 20:05.77 (83rd), Lance Aasheim - 20:38.89 (89th), Keegan Vander Plaats - 21:31.36 (94th), and Karson Iken - 22:04.93 (96th).

The Lennox JV girls’ team also captured first place honors with eight of the members placing in the top ten.

Natalie Aesoph captured first place honors with a time of 17:05.53. Allison Loewe took second (17:18.63), Holly Gillick third (17:56.53), Ellianna Thill fifth (18:10.88), Lucy Carlson sixth (18:32.41), Gracie Wood seventh (18:38.05), Kenzie Bosma eighth (18:43.77), and Kaydence Gerry tenth (18:52.59).

Also competing for the Orioles was Graycee Postma - 19:43.33 (15th), Kassidy Williamson - 19:57.66 (17th), Callie Hammerstrom - 20:49.38 (22nd), Ava Elk Boy - 21:19.36 (25th), Jaelyn Fergen - 21:57.45 (31st), and Harper Walsh - 24:20.16 (42nd).
