LHS athletes set new Conference records: Bergan Musser, Tate Gerdes & Jaxson Bittner named Conference Champions


Bergan Musser continues to shine on the track for the Orioles. This past Thursday, May 9, Musser set a new Dak XII Record at the Dakota XII Conference Meet held in Hartford. Musser, a seventh grader, clocked a time of 25.62 seconds in the 200 meter dash to not only win the event but set a new Conference record. 

Lennox’s Jayla DeCou also competed in the event and earned fifth place with a time of 26.95. 

Another DakXII record was broken when Lennox High School’s Tate Gerdes cleared 6’6” to capture top honors in the event and set a new Conference Record in the process. Lennox’s Layton Smith also participated in the event, taking third place with a jump that cleared 5’11”. 

Gerdes also became Conference champion in the boys’ triple jump, jumping 40’4” to win the event. Wyatt Bult jumped 37’.25” to take eighth in the event for Lennox.

Record breaking performances continued as the girls’ 4x100 meter relay team of Tori Gerdes, Musser, Adelynn Timmermans, and Jayla DeCou finished with a time of 50.48 to take second in the event and set a new Conference record. 

Other top performances for the Orioles included a Conference Championship title performance by Jaxson Bittner who won the long jump with a jump of 19’7”. 

Bergan Musser grabbed another Conference title in the long jump, jumping a distance of 17’.25”. 

In other field events, Addison Martz captured runner-up honors in the girls’ shot put, throwing a distance of 35’.5”. Mia Hanisch took eighth (32’11.25”). Martz captured fourth in the girls’ discus with a throw of 107’3”. Holly Gillick captured fourth place honors in the high jump, clearing 5’3”. In the javelin throw, Dani Highum took third place honors with a throw of 115’9”. 

Relays finding success included a second place finish by the boys’ 4x400 meter relay. The team, composed of Chett Jibben, Noah Sayler, Cade Sherard, and Drake Mikkelsen, captured runner-up honors with their time of 3:32.13 in the event. The boys’ 4x200 meter relay team of Ethan Larson, Jaxson Bittner, Boston Katzer, and Drake Mikkelsen, captured second place honors with a time of 1:32.33. 

The boys’ 1600 meter sprint medley really team of Corbin Hanneman, Boston Katzer, Noah Sayler, and Chett Jibben took third with a time of 3:52.96. 

The girls’ 4x400 meter relay team of Tori Gerdes, Jayla DeCou, Adie McVey and Karlie Bosma took third place with a time of 4:06.90. 

Individually, Cade Sherard earned runner-up honors in the boys’ 800 meter run, clocking a time of 1:59.60. Cloy McVey took fifth in the event with a time of 2:05.83. 

Lennox’s Karlie Bosma took runner-up honors in the girls’ 800 meter run, clocking a time of 2:22.57. Adie McVey took fourth in the event (2:28.17) and Kenzie Bosma (2:33.47) finished seventh in the event. 

In the girls’ 100 meter hurdles, Tori Gerdes took fifth place with a time of 16.64. Gerdes claimed fourth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 48.18. 

In the boys’ 110 meter hurdles, Joey Boysen placed sixth with a time of 17.44. In the boys’ 300 meter hurdles, Drake Mikkelsen took fourth with a time of 43.18. 

In the boys’ 200 meter dash, Ethan Larson took seventh clocking a time of 24.05. 

In the boys’ 1600 meter run, Cloy McVey took fourth (4:38.99) and Noah Sayler finished fifth (4:40.10). 

In the girls’ 1600 meter run, Kelsey Schmidt took fourth with a time of 5:17.99. Schmidt also competed in the 3200 meter run where she claimed third place with a time of 11:38.17. 

Adie McVey finished sixth (1:03.79) in the 400 meter dash. 

The Orioles will compete at Elk Point Jefferson this Thursday, May 16 in the Region Meet. Action is set to begin at 2 p.m. 

This year’s State Meet will be held at Howard Wood in Sioux Falls, Friday, May 24 and Saturday, May 25.
