Lennox track & field teams off to a strong start; Musser breaks long jump record

The Lennox High School track and field teams put together an impressive showing at the Elk Point Jefferson meet on Tuesday, April 8, with both the boys’ and girls’ squads capturing the team titles. The Lennox boys took first with 134 points and the Lennox girls captured first with 135 points.

Eighth grader Bergan Musser highlighted the day with a record-breaking leap of 18 feet, 2 inches in the long jump, setting a new school record and securing first place in the event. Musser also sprinted her way to two more top performances, taking first in both the 100m (12.21) and 200m dash (25.11 - a personal record). Teammate Jayla DeCou earned second place in the 100m dash (12.84) and took first in the 400m (1:03.83), helping secure that team title. 

In the hurdles, Tori Gerdes swept both the girls’ 100m (16.86) and 300m (48.27) hurdles. Other event winners  for the girls included Adie McVey in the girls’ 1600m who captured first with a personal best 5:25.61. McVey was also a part of the girls’ 4x400 meter relay team of Karlie Bosma, Haven Larson, and Lucy Carlson, who captured second place with a time of 4:35.45. 

The girls’ 4x800 meter relay team of Sophia Johnson, Josephine Plucker, Allison Loewe, and Kelsey Schmidt, captured second place honors with their time of 11:02.10. 

In the girls’ field events, Addison Martz had a strong day with a third-place finish in both the discus (107’4”) and shot put (34’0”). Lilly Meyer earned a third-place finish in the javelin (97’2”).

On the boys’ side, Cloy McVey led a strong middle-distance group, winning the 800m in 2:01.95. Teammate Cade Sherard was close behind in second. McVey also anchored the winning 4x400m relay team with Sherard, Noah Sayler, and Chett Jibben (3:36.93). Sayler earned individual honors as well, winning the 1600m in 4:48.21, with Chett Jibben following in second with a personal best.

Drake Mikkelsen claimed first in the boys’ 300m hurdles (42.11), while Wyatt Bult and Joey Boysen finished 4th (17.25) and 5th (17.69) respectively in the 110m hurdles. Boysen took sixth in the 300 meter hurdles (47.82). 

Tate Gerdes and Layton Smith both cleared 6’0” to share first place honors in the boys’ high jump.

The boys’ 4x200m relay team of Boston Katzer, Teegan Musser, Jaxson Bittner, and Mikkelsen also claimed first place with a time of 1:33.17.

The boys’ 1600m Sprint Medley relay team of Ben Dejong, Elijah Johnson, Landon Strasser and Isaac Booker, took second place honors with a time of 4:10.47. 

In the field events for the boys Emory Lefers took second in the boys’ shot put (43’8”), and Nate Haar placed third in the discus with a personal best of 126’5”. 

On Thursday, Apr. 10 the LHS track and field team traveled to Vermillion. Once again they found success with Musser taking top honors in the girls’ 200 meter dash, lowering her school record with a time of 25.09 seconds. Musser also helped the girls’ 4x200 meter relay team of (Gerdes, Bosma, and DeCou) to a first place finish with a time of 1:47.36. 

Also claiming top honors for the girls was Gerdes in the 200 meter hurdles. Gerdes clocked a season’s best 47.85 to win the event. Schmidt took first in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:32.53. McVey claimed top honors for the girls in the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:45.89. 

In field events, Martz took second in the girls’ discus throw, throwing a distance of 111’08” in the event. Martz took second in the shot put, with a throw of 34’9”, a season’s best and she claimed third place in the javelin throw with a toss of 94’2”. 

For the LHS boys, McVey took top honors in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:00.41, setting a new personal record. Sayler took second with a time of 2:07.10 and Jibben fifth (2:09.16). 

In the boys’ high jump, Gerdes cleared 6’2” to claim top honors. Smith cleared 6’ to take second. Gerdes also claimed third place honors in the triple jump, jumping 28’3”. Musser took second in the boys’ long jump, jumping a distance of 20’8”, Bitter claimed third in the event with a jump of 20’5.5”. 

The boys’ 4x400 meter relay team of Sayler, Sherard, Jibben and Booker took second place honors with a time of 3:38.31. 

At Vermillion the boys and girls finished second as a team, behind Sioux Falls Christian. 

The Orioles were scheduled to compete in the Titan Relays in Tea on Tuesday, Apr. 15 and will be at home on Thursday, Apr. 17 when they compete in the Lennox Invite.
