Lennox rolls past Garretson for third straight win

On Thursday, Sept. 3 the Lennox High School girls soccer team earned their third win in a row, defeating Garretson, 7-2 at home. 

The Orioles had to battle back for a close victory when they first faced Garretson earlier in the season. This time, despite giving up the opening goal early, Lennox quickly settled in and controlled the match on both sides of the field.

“The Garretson game indicates how much improvement our team is making,” said Lennox head coach Paul McVey. “Although we conceded the first goal early again, we were in control the entire game with a consistent effort on both offense and defense giving us a 7-2 victory.”

Adie McVey led the offensive attack with an impressive four goals and two assists, while Bergan Musser added three goals and two assists. Tori Gerdes contributed one assist.

McVey said the Orioles’ attacking unit of Musser, McVey, Gerdes and Nora Alustiza Roitegui is beginning to find its rhythm.

“Our attacking unit ... are really clicking and starting to find each other in open spaces which inevitably leads to the ball finding the back of the net,” he said.

Lennox has also continued to make strides defensively. 

“Peyton Herlyn, Harper Kahler, and Annika Winterboer are doing a great job of making connecting passes in the defensive midfield. Our back line including Jayla DeCou, Ryleigh Black, Kamille Schmidt, Jocelyn Thoms, and goalkeepers Kensi Holland and Sophia Haar are developing some defensive swagger and becoming an intimidating group to try to score on,” said McVey. 

With the three-game winning streak, the Orioles will soon face some of their biggest tests of the season. Lennox is scheduled to take on Groton Area, West Central and Dakota Valley, all top-five programs.

“We are looking forward to testing our mettle against top-five programs,” McVey said. “This crew will have the opportunity to earn a high seed for the playoffs and see if we can crack the top five ourselves.”

Lennox will travel to Groton on Tuesday, Sept. 15, for a 4 p.m. match-up before returning home to host Dakota Valley on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 5:30 p.m.
