The Lennox Area Museum, located on Main Street Lennox, is owned by the City of Lennox, but its exhibits and artifacts are preserved and maintained by the Lennox Area Historical Society (LAHS). This dedicated group of local volunteers, many of whom are longtime residents, takes responsibility for managing donations, maintaining exhibits, researching local history, and welcoming visitors to the museum.
Among the museum’s notable artifacts is the historic “Smitty’s Popcorn Wagon,” a beloved fixture that once served popcorn along Main Street on Saturday nights for decades. When the LAHS received the wagon, it was in significant disrepair. After months of discussion, restoration efforts began with the hope of eventually returning the wagon to working order—not for profit, but to bring back memories, spark conversations, and share a sense of nostalgia within the community.
Restoration costs have been considerable and, as with many vintage vehicle projects, exceeded initial estimates. New tires have been installed, bodywork was completed by Denning Companies, and students in the Lennox High School shop class contributed by rebuilding the window framing. Upcoming needs include a new stainless steel counter, a popcorn machine, and a safe fuel hookup system. The bodywork, the most significant expense, remains the largest outstanding cost.
The Historical Society is now seeking support from the community to help cover the restoration expenses. Residents with fond memories of the popcorn wagon—or those whose parents or grandparents once visited it—are encouraged to contribute to the cause.
