Lennox High Marching Band triumphs at Pursuit of Excellence, sweeps Gold Class honors

Marching bands from across a three-state region competed at Marshall on Saturday, Sept. 21 for the annual Pursuit of Excellence competition at Southwest Minnesota State University.

The Lennox High School Marching Band took home first place in the Gold Class at the competition, and captured top honors for Best Music GE, Visual GE, Woodwinds, Brass, Concert Percussion, Battery Percussion, and Color Guard.

“The students have been working incredibly hard the last two weeks and their dedication paid off,” said LHS band director, Ellie Kenkel.  “We’re already working on what we need to fix for our next weekend in Luverne and Brandon. Go Orioles!”

The band’s show, “The Junkyard,” echoes the idea from The Black Market jingle (Benson’s Flea Market): one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. The show ends with the Lennox High School color guard showing off the amazing motorcycle (courtesy of Al Osborn) they created out of the junk parts.

Next up for the band is a parade performance at the Homecoming parade this Friday, Sept. 27 beginning at 1:30 p.m.  The LHS Marching Band will also perform their field show at halftime of the Homecoming game Friday night, which is set to kick-off at 7 p.m.

The band’s next competition will be this Saturday, Sept. 28 when they compete at the Tri-State Band Festival in Luverne on Saturday at approximately 1:05 p.m. and then at Brandon in the Big Sioux Review also on Saturday, Sept. 28. Lennox is scheduled to perform at approximately 7 p.m.
