State Champs: Lennox Jr. Legion claims State title



On Sunday, Aug. 5 the Lennox Junior Legion baseball team (pictured at right) captured the 2018 South Dakota State Junior Legion Baseball Title. The team defeated Redfield, 8-2 to win the Championship.

Their State run began on Friday, Aug. 3 in Winner with an opening game against Mission. Lennox jumped out early, leading 4-1 heading into the fourth inning. 

In the opening inning, Jace Bridges hit a triple on a fly ball to center fielder, scoring both Peyton Eich and Mace Plucker. Prior to the triple, Plucker hit a single on a line drive, scoring Brendon Hone. 

In the big fifth inning, Plucker doubled to score Eich which began a series of runs for Lennox. Bridges singled next, scoring Plucker. Bridges crossed home plate as Brandon Fodness hit a single. Zach Zirpel singled to score Fodness and Mason Miller singled to bring Zirpel home. Miller managed to score as Eich singled giving Lennox an 11-2 advantage after five innings of play. 

Lennox continued their explosive offense, scoring four more runs in the sixth to help them get the eventual 15-3 victory. 

Lennox tallied 18 hits in the game with Bridges, Plucker, Zirpel, Eich, Gavin Sanculi, Fodness, and Miller all managing multiple hits.  Lennox stole 13 bases during the game, Fodness led the way with four.

Ty Spieler earned the win for Lennox on the mound. He surrendered three runs on three hits over six innings, striking out five and walking zero.
