Lennox wins State Legion Championship; Tournament draws big crowd in Lennox


Despite a few rain showers over the weekend, the 2019 Class B State Senior Legion Baseball Tournament in Lennox brought in an abundance of area fans for five straight days of exciting baseball action.

State Tournament play began on Friday, Aug. 2 with opening ceremonies being held in the afternoon. Lennox High School/Lennox Jr. High principal Chad Allison sang the National Anthem.

Host team Lennox wrapped up action on Friday, facing off against Dell Rapids in the final evening game of the day.

The two teams put on a show. Dell Rapids took the 2-0 lead after two innings of play but Lennox quickly answered back, scoring four runs in the bottom of the third. Dell Rapids managed one run in both the top of the sixth and seventh innings to force extra innings.

In the bottom of the ninth, JD Kirchner hit a game winning RBI single bringing Tyson Stoebner across home plate, giving Lennox the 5-4 victory.

Zach Leisinger went three of five from the plate, including a home run in the third inning which brought three runners in. Zach Foss had two hits in the game and Kirchner and Quincy Ihnen each had a hit in the game.

On the mound, Brock Anderson started the game, recording 13 strike outs in 6-1/3 innings. Foss earned the win, getting the final four outs of the game.

With the win, Lennox advanced to face Winner/Colome on Saturday, Aug. 3.
