Worthing students bid farewell to principal, teachers

Worthing Elementary students sang the praises of Principal Kym Johnston and three teachers who left the school at the end of the school year at a special concert May 16.

Johnston, who had been with the Lennox School District for 19 years, attended her last concert that evening in the district. For the 2019-20 school year, Johnston will serve as the principal at Sioux Falls Christian Elementary.

Fourth-grade teacher Jodi Pixler, third-grade teacher Tara Drake and preschool teacher Jade Fjelstad were also recognized at the concert for their time at Worthing Elementary. Pixler has decided to stay home with her children. Drake is transferring to Lennox Elementary fourth-grade. Fjelstad will be teaching at Sioux Falls Lutheran School next year.

Students and teachers share memories of Johnston.

No. 1 on the list is her cartwheels.

“She does cartwheels,” first-grader Tanner Prickett said. “She only does it at lunch time, if we’re quiet, on Fridays.”

Second-graders Evelyn Malmberg and Jonathon Weisenbach agree with the cartwheels.

“When she did the cartwheels, she would always say call 911 if the old lady falls down,” Malmberg said.

Weisenbach also said that the students gave Johnston gifts at the concert and that she was crying right away.
