Debate team mid-way through season

December 20, 2018

This past Friday, the Lennox Speech and Debate team participated at the Brookings Bell tournament.  This tournament usually marks the mid-way point of the debate season.  So far, the team shows great potential from an extremely young squad.

This year, the team currently has only two seniors that are returning to the squad and they have seen limited competition.  That has put a lot of focus on the sophomore and freshman debaters.

At the Washington Warrior tournament, freshmen Kaylee Bosma placed tenth and Gracie Dose placed eighth in novice oratory.  That same weekend at the Sioux Falls Roosevelt Sweetstakes, Nathan Waltjer placed eleventh with a 2-2 record in Varsity Lincoln Douglas.

On November 16 at the Mitchell McGovern, Nathan Waltjer finished ninth in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking, and the top novice public forum team of Katie Brenholt and Xavier Larson went 2-3 at the competition.

On November 20 the team participated at a novice debate competition at Harrisburg.  The top novice public forum team of Ellen Boomgarden and Blake Gibney wen t 2-2 at the competition.

On December 4 the novice team participated at the class “A” invitational held at Sioux Falls Christian.  Two of the teams went undefeated at the competition.  The squad of Kaylee Bosma and Anna Calhoon and the team of Savanah Talatzko and Blake Gibney went 3-0.

Later that week at the first Central Forensics Conference (CFC) in Harrisburg on December 8, several students received top results.  In speech and interpretation events, Xavier Larson placed fifth and Anna Calhoon placed third in dramatic interp, Kaylee Bosma placed fifth in novice original oratory, in informative speaking Anna Calhoon placed fifth and Katie Brenholt placed fourth, and in varsity extemporaneous speaking Nathan Waltjer placed third.  On the debate side, the novice public teams of Anna Calhoon and Kaylee Bosma and the team of Katie Brenholt and Madison Johnson finished with a 2-2 record.  Nathan Waltjer placed third in varsity Lincoln-Douglas.
