On Friday, Mar. 3 the third seeded Lennox High School girls’ basketball team took on 14th seeded Crow Creek in Parkston in a Sweet 16 match-up; at stake—a trip to the 2017 State A Tournament.
Lennox came out on fire early and never looked back, dominating the boards and the basket as they took the 69-48 victory to advance to the State A Tournament.
The Orioles out rebounded Crow Creek, 45-27 and shot over 43 percent in the game. Earning double-doubles in the game were Madysen Vlastuin and Jordan Kruse. Vlastuin pulled down ten rebounds and had 13 points in the game. Kruse scored 12 points while pulling down 12 rebounds. Vlastuin also had four assists and three steals. Kruse had two assists and one steal.
Riley Peters also had a strong night for the Orioles, scoring 21 points, hitting six of eight from downtown. She also grabbed five rebounds, had two assists and two steals.
“The girls came out ready to play,” said Oriole head coach Dan DeVries. “Our defense turned into offensive points.”
DeVries’ team had 15 steals in the game and forced 20 turnovers. The Orioles scored 17 points off of turnovers.
Also contributing to the team’s success on Friday night was Rianna Fillipi who had ten points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Courtney Weeldreyer finished with eight points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Bailey Nelson had two points, three rebounds, and one assist. Megan Hinker, Jenna Bruns, and Abbie Strasser each had a point. Strasser pulled down four rebounds and one assist. Hinker had one rebound, one assist and two steals.
