LHS girls remain undefeated: Defeat Dells in overtime to move to 8-0


With their undefeated record on the line, the Lennox High School girls’ basketball team hosted Dell Rapids Monday night, Jan. 9.

Lennox led 16-10 after one quarter of play but watched as the lead dwindled down to one at the half, 27-26.

With a back and forth battle in the second half, the game was sent into overtime. With just 23 seconds left in overtime, Maddie Vlastuin hit the layup and was fouled. Vlastuin hit the free throw to put Lennox up, 61-60.

After Dells missed a shot on their next possession, the Orioles grabbed the rebound and Dells’ fouled for a one and one situation. Lennox hit both foul shots to give them the 63-60 lead with just six seconds left in the game.

Dell Rapids had one last shot and put up a three point attempt to tie the game before the buzzer but it hit the rim twice before falling away, ending the threat and allowing the Orioles to remain undefeated.

For Lennox, Rio Fillipi led the way with 21 points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Riley Peters finished the night with 19 points, hitting three three-pointers in the game and all six attempts at the foul line. She also had four rebounds, one assist and one steal. She also had six rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Jordan Kruse also finished in double figures for the Orioles, scoring ten points in the game. She hit five of her six attempts from the field.

Vlastuin finished with nine points, seven rebounds, eight assists and two steals. Megan Hinker added four points, two rebounds, and one assist. Courtney Weeldreyer had eight rebounds and three assists in the game.

Prior to their win over Dells, the Orioles added to their win column on Friday, Jan. 6 defeating Platte-Geddes. After leading 29-16, the LHS girls continued to roll grabbing the decisive 64-36 victory. Lennox shot nearly 49 percent in the game, bettering Platte-Geddes’ 34 percent.
