Worthing Days celebration next weekend


The City of Worthing is gearing up for their annual community celebration next weekend, August 26, 27 and 28, 2016. The Worthing Days Committee comprised of Jon Hanson, John Ganschow, Cori Peterson, Megan Weisenbach, Denise Hanson, Chad Dangel, Jodi Atkins, Denise Nelson, Sheri Lund, Aaron Zahn, Jamie Stucky and Crystal Jacobson has been busy in preparation.

There is a full line-up of events beginning on Friday, Aug. 26 at 6 p.m. with a walking taco supper on Main Street. A Bean Bag Tourney will also take place at 6 p.m., it is limited to 20 teams, registration forms can be found online at cityofworthing.com, or e-mail Ganschow at ganschowj@yahoo.com. The cost is $30 per team with a first place payout of $75 and a second place payout of $50.

Also Friday night at 6:30 there will be a cruise night and root beer floats hosted by the Masons. Contact Zahn with questions, e-mail aaronfzahn@outlook.com.

Saturday, Aug. 27 is the big day with events beginning at 7 a.m., when the 5K to benefit Renae Favors will begin on Main Street. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m., cost is $30 per runner, race day registrations are welcome but not guaranteed a t-shirt. The race proceeds will benefit Ranae Favors, of Canton, who is battling pancreatic cancer.

The course is a 3.1 mile out and back starting and ending on Main Street in Worthing. Snacks and water will be provided at the finish line. Medals will be awarded to the top finishers in each age group.

Then at 8 a.m. there will be a Volley Ball Tournament at the Rec Complex, limited team spots remain, call Ganschow at 660-1291 if interested.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. Line up starts at 9 a.m. on Sund St., Lily, and Chris St. The parade route will pull out on to Highway 44 heading east to Main Street, South to Third St., then head west to Louise Ave., then departing. For parade questions call Hanson at 929-4237.

Activities and Arts and Crafts Vendors will be set up at the Worthing Elementary School from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There is still vendor space available. Applications can be found online, Jacobson said the deadline has been extended. Fees are $15 for vendors using their own table or $30 for vendors using a facility table. Contact Peterson, phone 359-8080 or e-mail cpetersonshelby@yahoo.com.

The kid’s activities include inflatables, the Outdoor Campus, and a dunk tank, cost will be $5.00 per person for all activities.

Food vendors will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A kid’s bicycle poker run and bike decorating contest will begin at 2 p.m.
