Lennox Legion completes Turf Buddy project

At the end of June, the idea of raising funds for installing turf on the pitching mound and around the home plate area at the Lennox Baseball Field was brought up at the Lennox Brethorst-Burma Post 174 Legion meeting. The following week, the Legion began asking area businesses, organizations and individuals to contribute to the project and just last week, the project was completed, thanks to generous contributions from the community.

“A huge thank you to all the businesses and families who donated funds to this project,” said Post Commander John Kirchner.

Kirchner was pleased that it only took a matter of months from the concept of the idea to the finished project.

Several community members put many hours of volunteer work in. Those who helped prepare for the turf installation were Tyler Leisinger, Jared Fodness, Chad Reilly, Johnny Kirchner, Todd Anderson, Merris Miller, Greg Stoebner, Jason Foss, Chris Wagner, Curt Lottman, Joel Begeman, Orville Wiebers, Brock Anderson, and Zach Foss.

Equipment for the dirt work was provided by Jeremy Hanisch and Joel Begeman.

“There have been approximately 40 man hours involved and volunteered for the project,” said Kirchner.

The Turf Consultant Firm started laying the turf on Sept. 8 and wrapped up on Sept. 10. There is some small touch-up work to finish but the plan was to have that completed in one to two weeks.

“A huge thank you to the volunteers that helped at the work night at the park. It was all greatly appreciated and another positive for the community,” added Kirchner.

Thanks to the project, field preparation time will be greatly reduced and rain outs should be eliminated, which will be a big bonus for the Lennox High School team that plays in the Spring.
