Lennox residents show their patriotic pride: Decorating contest going on now

A month remains before Lennox’s Annual Old Fashioned Fourth of July celebration, and the Lennox Commercial Club has plans well underway for all of the events. With thousands of visitors expected, residents in the community often spruce up their home for the occasion.

One great example is at 300 North Cherry, Lennox. One of the home-owners, Jan Weaver, said that the project started because she saw a red mailbox on TV and thought it was beautiful.

“My son got me the red mailbox for Christmas, and we put it out in February,” she said.

Then her neighbor, Kent DeJong saw it and came over to ask if they came in blue or white, as he was already thinking patriotic.

Weaver said that DeJong painted the frame, reinforced it, and installed the other four boxes. Their other neighbor, Ken Sayler was so happy that it was patriotic that he wanted to contribute to the cause. Weaver added the red, white and blue bunting and said that the mailboxes are a nice tribute to the servicemen who live there — her husband John was a Coast Guardsman, Sayler was in the Army and DeJong was in the Marines.

In an effort to encourage this “Red, White & Blue” theme around town, The Lennox Independent is organizing a 4th of July Home & Business Decorating Contest. This will be an opportunity for residents to show their patriotic side and beautify the Lennox community before the Old Fashioned Fourth of July festivities begin. To enter, fill out the registration form on page 2 or visit www.lennoxnews.com. Entries must be submitted by Friday, June 29 and decorations must be up through July 5. You must submit your address to be considered for the prize package.

The prize package will include: family four pack of tickets to the Great Plains Zoo, four one-time passes good for admission to the Visual Arts Center, Kirby Science Discovery Center, and mission-based films at the Wells Fargo CineDome, four vouchers for a Sioux Falls Canaries game, two one-week passes to Forever Fitness in Lennox, a gift certificate to the Archery Shak range in Lennox and more!

A panel of judges will visit the addresses submitted to determine the winner, to be judged on patriotic theme and overall appeal. Winner will be announced at the Lennox Municipal Band Concert during the Old Fashioned Fourth of July and in The Lennox Independent on July 5th, 2018.
