Locked N Loaded to play for Steever benefit

March 26, 2015

When Sioux City, Iowa, police officer Chad Sheehan learned of a benefit for Kathy Steever in Worthing, he volunteered his band Locked N Loaded to play for free.

Otis’ Bar & Grill in Worthing is hosting a benefit April 4 for Kathy Steever, who was wounded at the shooting at Sioux Steel. Sheehan found out about the fundraiser on Facebook and decided to contact the bar to offer his band to play.

Sheehan said he and his bandmates wanted to help a person they had never met because they experienced that same outpouring of support when band member John Fitch’s wife was wounded in the line of duty last fall.

“I felt compelled to do something. It was one thing that I felt we could do to help out and show support,” Sheehan said. “We don’t live there but we’re only 60 miles away. We got to experience how supportive the community was for Jill when she went through her deal so this is a way for us to pay back.”

In addition to Sheehan and Fitch, Locked N Loaded consists of David Owings as drummer, Ritchie Howard as bass player, Jenny Kenaston on vocals and Jerry Steffen on keyboard. The band formed in 2010 after Sheehan hosted a benefit for his father-in-law, a 30-year band member of Lockwood. His father-in-law encouraged him to start his own band so Sheehan and Fitch worked to form their band by May 2010.

Since then, Locked N Loaded has traveled to various events in about a 180-mile radius of Sioux City. The Steever benefit will be their first event in the Lennox area.

Kim Heisinger with Otis’ Bar & Grill said Sheehan contacted them to play at the benefit.

“They actually contacted us. We had posted on Facebook about the benefit. They wanted to do it for free, donate their time and I was like ‘wow,’” Heisinger said.

The April 4 benefit at Otis’ includes a bake sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Anyone who wishes to donate bake sale items can drop items off at the bar in the afternoon April 3 or April 4 between 9 and 10 a.m. A silent auction takes place from 1-6 p.m. Don and Jon Sweeter will auctioneer at the live auction starting at 1 p.m. at the Worthing Civic Center.
