It could be an interesting year at Lennox City Hall. With six of seven positions up for grabs, there could potentially be a lot of new faces sitting on Lennox City Council following elections in April.
The unusual circumstances came about when, due to lack of candidates, two aldermen were appointed to the council last year. Marlyn Jacobson was appointed for Ward I and Les Noonan was appointed to serve Ward II. He has since resigned and Alan Ratliff appointed to that same position. Because they were appointed and not elected, those positions will once again be open. Aldermen Philip Fett, Ward I representative; Greg Poppenga, Ward II; and Mike Gregg, Ward III have served their two year terms. Mayor Orville Wiebers has also served his term of office and that position will also be open to election. That means, of course, the only person guaranteed to return to the council is Tracy West, from Ward III, who has served one year of a two-year term.
It is likely that some, if not all, of the men will decide to run for re-election this year, but all positions are open to anyone who would like to serve the community by sitting on the council. While the candidate for Mayor can live anywhere in the City, the aldermen must live in the Ward that they are serving. Nominating petitions can be picked up at City Hall and can be circulated beginning Friday, Jan. 29. They must be filed in City Hall by 5 p.m. on Friday, February 26.
The City of Lennox is divided into three wards:
• Ward One: portion of the incorporated city limits east of a line passing along the center of Main Street. North to Rummel Street then East to Cherry Street and then North to City limits.
• Ward Two: portion of incorporated city limits west of a line passing along the center of Main Street and south of a line passing along the center of Third Ave and to exclude the North half of the blocks between Juniper Street and Elm Street.
• Ward Three: portion of incorporated city limits west of a line passing along the center of Main Street and north of a line passing along the center of Third Ave. and to include the North half of the blocks between Juniper Street and Elm Street and blocks N of Rummel Street between Main Street and Cherry Street.
In Worthing, three commissioner positions will be open. Those positions are for three year terms. They are currently held by Carrie McDannel, Ryan Schlieman and Sheri Lund. As in Lennox, both Schlieman and Lund were appointed to their posts. McDannel has completed her three-year term. These positions are all at-large in Worthing. If you are interested in running, you may pick up a nominating petition from City Hall. Circulation of those petitions may begin on Friday, Jan. 29 and they must be returned to Worthing City Hall by Friday, Feb. 26.
The Lennox School District will also be holding elections on April 12th. Two 3-year terms are open on the school board. Those positions are currently held by Merris Miller and Nancy Nelson. Nominating petitions may be picked up at the office of the business manager at 305 West 5th Ave., Lennox. Circulation can begin Jan. 29 and they must be filed in the business office by Feb. 26th.
