Voters in Worthing will head to the polls on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 to vote for a commissioner, three year term. Up for election is Ryan Schlieman (incumbent) and Denise Moani Nelson.
The election polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voting takes place at the Worthing Civic Center, 123 S. Main St.
Any voter who needs assistance, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may contact the municipal finance officer at 605-372-4113 before the election for information on polling place accessibility for people with disabilities.
Questionnaires were sent to both candidates, answers begin at right and continue inside.
Ryan Schlieman received his Bachelor of Science from South Dakota State University, and his Masters of Science from Minnesota State University Moorhead. He and his family have lived in the Worthing community since 2013. He and his wife, Ashley have a three year old daughter, Madilynn and a one year old son, Jack.
What kind of experience do you have that you feel qualifies you to be a Worthing Commissioner?
I am an 8th grade science teacher at Whittier Middle school in Sioux Falls. This career requires excellent time and resource management. I have also had the pleasure of spending the last three and a half years on the Worthing city commission.
What are the top three issues you want to work on as an elected official?
We need to continue to make sure that the safety needs of our citizens are being met.

Denise Moani Nelson graduated from Bethel College in Mishawaka, Indiana with an AA in Secretarial Studies and graduated from Carthage College in Racine, Wisconsin with a Paralegal Certification. She and her husband Ron have lived in Worthing for 11 years. They moved here from the Chicago area to be near her elderly mother, who lives not far away in Orange City, Iowa.
What kind of experience do you have that you feel qualifies you to be a Worthing Commissioner?
I have a wide variety of experience. After graduating from college I worked for the Chamber of Commerce in South Bend, Indiana for five years. I was part of the economic development section and was voted in as a commissioner in the South Bend Economic Development Commission. I have also been a paralegal for 25 years and have a lot of experience dealing with the public.
