Halverson, West receive top honors at State

The Lennox oral interp squad ended their season on a high note December 6th and 7th in Watertown at the state competition.  Competing in various competitions throughout the season, the students had to vie for the best overall scores in order to compete at the region competition.
“Students compete in different categories throughout the season, which include humorous, duet, non-original oratory, serious prose, serious plays and poetry.  I keep track of their wins and speaker points during the season, and then choose which students are the best in their particular category,” explained their coach, Krista Bruggeman.

Military Police Soldiers back in the US

Soldiers of the 235th Military Police Company, South Dakota Army National Guard, arrived in the United States Saturday evening, Dec. 14, after serving a nine-month deployment in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Members of the Rapid City and Sioux Falls-based 235th arrived in Fort Bliss, Texas, and will spend about a week there completing demobilization requirements before returning to South Dakota. 
The 235th mobilized 124 Soldiers with a mission to provide security for U.S. military personnel, installations and facilities and to guard prisoners of war and civilian internees. 
No details of the unit's arrival to South Dakota or welcome home ceremony are known at this time. Details of the unit's arrival home will be made available to the public as soon as they are confirmed.

Angela Arlt named Business Manager of the Year

Angela Arlt, Business Manager for the Lennox School District, was selected as the Area II Business Manager of the Year  by her peers. The Area II Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) consists of 34 public schools and two educational cooperatives in the southeastern area of South Dakota.
Arlt, who is the current president of the South Dakota ASBO, was presented with a plaque in recognition of the honor on Dec. 11.

Lennox appoints new Finance Officer

Lennox City Council opened their meeting with Webelos Pack 109 presenting the colors.
Mayor Orville Wiebers thanked the scouts for coming to the meeting.
Following the approval of the minutes, claims, payroll and finance officer’s report, the council held the second reading of Ordinance 539, an ordinance to rezone the property at 905 S. Main St. from residential to general business. The ordinance was approved.
The next item of business was the second reading of Ordinance 540, an ordinance that would rezone the old football field property from NRC Floodplain/Conservation District to General Business District.
Resident Don Kniffen reiterated his opposition to the ordinance. “Adjacent landowners don’t think this is a good fit for our community,” he said.

Superintendent search underway

The Lennox School District 41-4 board of education held their December meeting Monday night at 6 p.m. The Lennox High School and LWC Middle School concert was also scheduled for this night at 8 p.m. The board approved the financial reports as presented.
Superintendent Robert Mayer updated the board on the Planning Time Task force, saying the group had met three times and would be presenting a proposal to the board at the January meeting. Mayer requested the board to email any questions the members may have to him ahead of time so the task force would be able to address any issues.

Journey to family: Local couple doubly blessed through adoption

Becoming parents
Dave and Kimberly Klock knew they wanted to become parents after they married. They planned to have three children. The couple’s quest for children took them on a journey neither expected but both embraced.
After unsuccessful attempts to conceive, the couple turned to adoption. When asked about their preferences, the Klocks placed few restrictions on their adoption application. Like most parents to be, they simply hoped for a healthy child to love.

Lennox School District 41-1 asks for input in superintendent search

The Lennox School District Board of Education has selected Dakota Education Consulting (DEC) to assist the district in its selection of the next Superintendent of Schools for the Lennox School District.  The selection process will begin in earnest in January of 2014 but prior to that the Board of Education has asked DEC to gather data on the desirable qualities of the next Superintendent. The survey link below is designed to gather that information.  Please take a few minutes and complete the survey.  Your responses will be anonymous and will advise the Board on the important characteristics of the next leader of the Lennox School District.  The survey will be open through Dec. 8.
