Keeping a close eye on the soybean crop

Soybean producers around the Lennox area are enjoying deep green fields this month.
However, they should be on the lookout for soybean aphids. Pete Sexton, supervisor for the Southeast Research Farm near Beresford, said they have started seeing some aphids.
“There are a few of them out there. I’d say 30-40 per plant,” Sexton said. “It’s not enough to warrant spraying but it is enough that people should keep an eye on it.”
Lennox producer Dave Poppens has not seen any aphids in any of their fields yet but they have been out scouting.
“It’s something that we’ll keep on the lookout for. Normally the aphids would be the heaviest the second week of August,” Poppens said.
