News preview for Aug. 30th issue


Construction continues on SD Highways 44, 17

Duininck Inc. has completed the placement of the new asphalt overlay on SD 17. They have started on SD 44. Both projects will also be treated with a sand flush seal when the paving is complete. Traffic is being controlled using flaggers and a pilot car during the paving operation.

LifeLight Festival this weekend

When it kicks off this Friday, the LifeLight Festival will have many familiar features. First and foremost are the seven stages with over 100 bands that make it the largest free outdoor Christian music festival in the nation. But this Labor Day weekend, the festival has plenty of new things for people of all ages and interests.

City to begin ‘smoke testing’ on sewer system

At last week’s Lennox council meeting, the board approved hiring Stockwell Engineers to complete a sewer survey.  To begin, the engineers will be conducting a smoke test of the City’s sanitary sewer system.Beginning on Monday, Aug. 27 work crews will begin a “smoke test” to help crews in locating breaks and defects in the sewer system.

Survey recipients reminded to return surveys

Anyone who received an income survey from the City of Lennox is encouraged to fill it out and send it back to the City as soon as possible. These surveys are the first part of a process to see if the City qualifies for a Community Development Block Grant. All surveys will be kept confidential.

School Board to hear proposal on $99,000 scoreboards at next meeting

The Lennox School District 41-4 Board of Education meet on Monday night, August 16. There was a public hearing to deal with the waiver 24-43-08-01. Superintendent Robert Mayer explained this waiver would allow a home-schooling student to return to Lennox High School and have the opportunity to receive credit if the student can “test out” of certain classes. The State of South Dakota allows students the option to test out of: Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Biology, Chemistry, Geometry, Government, Physics, World History, Geography, Physical Science, US History, and Spanish. The Board would discuss this issue later in the meeting under action items. It was later voted on to be approved to allow the student the chance to test out of the subjects requested.

District Governor Beck returns from Korean convention

As Dr. Janell Beck got up to address the local Lions Club on July 26, she came to them not only as a fellow Lennox Lions member, but as the Multiple District 5SE Governor. The Multiple District 5 includes Lions in South Dakota, North Dakota and Saskatchewan, Canada. As a District Governor, Beck recently attended the International Lions Convention, held in Busan, Korea.

School begins Aug. 20

It’s that time of year again—summer is winding down and school is about to start. Students in the Lennox School District’s first day of school will be Monday, Aug. 20. Class lists have been posted at the school.

Annual Threshing Show this weekend

It’s become a tradition in the Lennox area—the first weekend of August is the Annual Threshing Show, put on by the Southeast South Dakota Thresherman’s Association. It’s a great family event and opportunity to show the kids how farming used to be done.....

Lennox amateurs reach State B Tournament for first time since 2006

With great pitching from Drew Longman Saturday night against Salem, the Lennox amateur Only One team was able to punch their ticket to the 2012 State B Tournament. This marks the second time Lennox has made it to the State Tournament and their first since 2006.
